I am in the 7:27 am train from Maplewood to Penn Station now. It‘s a short single decker. A lot of people standing. No fun. I‘ll give an update on arrival time later.
The 6:18 am to Penn yesterday got disabled in the tunnel and they had to single track (my train was almost 1 hour late). So what you were experiencing was likely just residual delays.
I usually take the 8:05 and my train is 'normally' about 10 minutes late, so for some times in the schedule delays are just the norm.
The 3:30 to NY crawled to a standstill for half an hour 500 feet from the Maplewood station.
The 6:50 back to Maplewood was delayed and massively overcrowded.
I was on the 7:27 from Maplewood this morning and there were plenty of seats. no one was standing in the car I was in - towards the front of the train. I think they changed the stops on this train prior to Maplewood OR it was an off day. It also got in pretty much on time. After last night, I was pleasantly surprised.
My early was fine as was my afternoon return trip. But there is work going on thru May so alerts should be checked.
The 8:05 from South Orange crawled from Secaucus this morning. Got in at 9.

The NJT site says the long term track work causing delays begins on weekdays at 10 a.m. I took a train around 9 a.m. yesterday and it crawled to NY - probably a half hour longer than usual, at least. I'm wondering if the 7ish trains were ok yesterday (and if you trust them going forward while this work is under way).
