NJ TRANSIT MyTix app (Android, iPhone) archived

Any positive/negative thoughts re this app? A friend recommended we use it for our 2-3 monthly trips into the city. Is it reliable?
I have used it, worked well. You have to activate the ticket within 2 hours of use I recall. Saves you $5 if you cant get a paper ticket from the station.

I am a fan of the app. I buy a paper monthly pass every month, but this app already saved me twice: once, when the trains got really screwed up, and I need to buy a fare going between Millburn and Maplewood, and another time when I forgot to buy my monthly pass and quickly bought a one-way ticket so I didn't get harassed by the conductor.

I've used it for several months on my iPhone without any issues. I really like it- much easier than having to buy a ticket.

I've used it since it was originally introduced in Android, at firs ta few times a week, then with a weekly pass, now with a monthly. I like how the weekly and monthly passes stay activated until they expire.

If I ever lost my phone (knock wood), I'd have to replace it AND my monthly. So I stick with paper monthlies.

Not saying the app is a bad idea, if you only need a couple of tickets per month, but I gather from the conductor announcements that they've had some problems with people not activating them before they go into the tunnel from Penn.

Another positive review here. Works great for my monthly, and I often use it for single tickets whenever we take out-of-town family or friends into the city. The only time it ever failed me was one morning when their servers went down and it failed for everyone. The conductors were already aware of it, so even then it wasn't an issue.

That's not true re: lost phone. See the FAQ. You can't use your login on two devices (so no sharing of the same ticket), but your account activity follows your login.

I've been happy with the app.

Q: What happens if my phone is lost, stolen or I replace it?
A: If your mobile phone is lost/stolen/replaced, once you have your new phone, you can sign in to your account with your User ID (email) and password. If you have active or non-active tickets, and do not see them, please delete and reinstall the app. If your tickets are still not shown please contact NJ TRANSIT at 973-275-5555 for assistance importing your tickets to your phone.

I don't think that's true. You have to create an account, and all your purchases are connected to that account. It's never happened to me, but Im pretty sure all you'd have to do is download the app on your new phone and sign in to your account and your monthly would still be there for you.

EDIT: Or, what ltc said.

Arguably, this makes it even better than a paper monthly. If you lose your paper ticket, it's just gone.

I use the app exclusively since I work part-time in the city. If I bought a monthly, I'm not sure I see the convenience or benefit to using it.

I do carry a paper ticket with me in an emergency, in case I can't get service and I get a nasty conductor who won't be patient.

Not saying the app is a bad idea. It just suits me to have a paper monthly tethered to my work bag, and a few extra paper R/T tickets to dispense to family members as needed. Once or twice a year I leave my phone behind, or it's dead, or I can't get wifi, or whatever. The extra expense and stress is not worth it to me.

Agreed, I commute through Hoboken in the morning and Penn in the evening, so I don't use a monthly, and the app works perfectly for my needs. I don't know that I'd bother if I did use a monthly, though I do like the convenience of being able to buy tickets on my phone rather than at a ticket machine.

I also carry a couple of spare paper tickets in case I forget to activate the ticket in the app before I get to Penn. It's rare that I forget, though--I've been using the app for long enough that it's a reflex by now.

The advantage of using it for the monthly is exactly the same as the advantage of using it for a single: No need to go to the ticket window or machine.

Do they expire if not activated?

I remember seeing expiration dates in the 2030s so effectively no.

I have the app and have used it on both android and iphone. It's fine. Biggest drawback was at the end of the day, I worried that I wouldn't have enough battery life left to pull up the ticket. This stopped being an issue when I got a little portable battery backup. I haven't had any problems in terms of reliability.

I debated over whether to continue to use a paper ticket or the MyTix app. I use MyTix for my monthly ticket and it works well for me. The NJ Transit people I've spoken to say it is more glitchy on the iPhone, and it has crashed on me, but all in all, I like it.

Like Brick Pig, I've used it to buy tickets for family and I really like it when I haven't bought a monthly. It only takes a second to buy a ticket and activate it. Much more convenient than standing in line at one of the machines or station agents.

Thanks, all, for the input. Very helpful. Sounds like it makes sense to use the app but keep a spare emergency paper ticket just in case.

Yes. I got screamed at last month. It was unpleasant.

Wow, really!? By a conductor? I think I'd have some rather choice words for them if I got screamed at for using an app that they, themselves, endorse.

I travel on NJT a couple of times a month and I only use tickets purchased via the app.

If I traveled daily I'd keep an emergency one-way in my wallet in case of connectivity issues.

No, I got yelled at for not having a ticket and I couldn't get into the app. The point is to always have a backup paper ticket. Also, that conducter is a jackass.

And my solution is to carry a Maplewood to South Orange ticket that I can then "step up" to Manhattan. If I lose it, I'm only out like $1.25 or whatever.

Isn't this app put out by NJ Transit?? If so, where do they get off screaming at you? Outrageous.

That's what I'm sayin'.

I've used the app since I've been here - about a month. It's convenient and it works, the only downside is it can take a little while to switch apps and the conductors aren't terribly patient. We are only talking a few seconds here, but alas. I just have to be a little more vigilant about keeping an ear out.

Yes, I've been caught out a few times when I've had my headphones on and have been deep into a book or my knitting. Some of the conductors are more tolerant than others, but it's still a little embarrassing when I have to suddenly fumble for my phone and pull the app up.

They request (warn) you to activate the ticket before you decend into the Penn Station hell that they call the tracks. Activating it on the train is a no-no (But NO excuse for berating a passenger who offers to purchase a ticket even with the $5.00 penalty) Conductor was a utter jackass)

If they accept the app, they ought to provide wifi so that customers can use it.
