My husband left his cell phone on the train. He called the phone and someone had turned it into the conductor. The conductor left it at our station for pick-up.
I left a coat on the train and made a record of it with lost and found at NYP. I checked back several times, but it was never located.
A couple summers ago NJT tracked down my suit jacket that I had left on the overhead rack of a westbound evening train. It was the first time I wore it so I was especially thankful. It took a few weeks and I had pretty much given up, so I was very thankful and surprised when I got the call!
I lost a cell phone it was at the NY lost and found. Go and look. I dont think they pro-actively call people.
I got a phone back after a conductor called me. But I agree, stop into the lost and found in Penn Station and ask. It's crammed with stuff.
Sometimes they call people. They called me when they found my train pass a number of years ago, and I have a friend who used to do lost and found at Newark Penn who would call people, but I don't think that's their typical MO.
They have this elaborate reporting system which is supposed to find a match and contact you. I stopped at the bulletproof glass window at Penn today and the woman was quite unhelpful. I think they may have stuff that is never returned because people can't see what they have, and stuff seems to be at multiple locations, which I also can't visit or track. Seems to be based on luck or the kindness of conductors.
Wondering whether anyone, at any time, has recovered a lost item on NJ Transit trains by having NJ Transit contact them through lost and found. I have lost three items through the years, most recently a bike helmet on Friday (with my name and cell no. on the side), and never recovered anything. The items are not valuable, but NJT gets very defensive about "the system." Lost items can take 1 day to 3 weeks to be logged in, and can end up in NY Penn, or Hoboken, or Gladstone, or nowhere. I have heard stories of individual conductors returning items to passengers they know.
