NJ Transit Friday?

For the trains what do you think the chances are?

I say 50/50 on it being still suspended vs. limited schedule. I'll be very surprised if they're back on a full schedule.

I assume you have signed up for the alerts via text and/or email for the lines you generally travel on. If you haven't I suggest you do so. It would be more productive than asking folks what the chances are. If you have already signed up then by all means start a thread like this but it still would be more helpful for you to at least say to folks that if for some reason there is a full suspension still, people might want to use this thread to post alternate suggestions for travel to NY and parts east.

I usually commute to Jersey City and get all alerts. Fortunately I've been working in Parsippany lately and from home these last few days.

I just saw on NJT site, service to remain suspended today

Wendy I just thought I'd start a discussion on a topic of interest. I'm aware of the alerts and other means to access information from NJ Transit. Yes you're correct that this thread is not productive but sometimes I come on here as a workday distraction/diversion for the express purpose of not being productive. I hope that's okay with you.

Not really okay with me but you do what you want of course, including the sarcastic attitude.

And I love that somehow one of the most unproductive threads that isn't even a fun distraction is getting duplicated. Lol!

I appreciate you starting this discussion, Smedley!  I think I'm going to take off tomorrow because I have very little faith the trains will be back by then and I'm sure the bus will be much more crowded than it was today.  I LOATHE the bus even when I get a non-humpy seat!!

I agree. I worked from home today -- I would have taken the bus if absolutely necessary but I was able to do what I had to do remotely, thankfully. I remember taking the 107 a couple times post-Sandy and it was pretty awful.

That said, if there are no trains I may be on the bus tomorrow, as I'm not sure if I can get away with another WFH day...

I drove to newark penn  and took the train from there.  left s. orange at 8 and in my office at 9:05.  and they did not collect tickets.

Tomorrow I will work from home because there will still be issues --- too many repairs needed and not enough time.

And by the way, I turned off my alerts.  they were incredibly annoying and not that helpful.  I just check the nj transit app when I want to know (and that sometimes direct me to the website).

And always curious to know what others are doing and generally seems to be one of the reasons for MOL -- threads to just discuss whatever people want.

If people don't like a thread then don't click on it.  I'm interested in what people think about tomorrow.  It's always a dilemma when we experience this type of weather.

You stalking me terp? Shall I report you to @jamie?

I'm not the commuter in my family, but he always asks me what I've learned from MOL or Facebook about this kind of thing.  (Yesterday afternoon I was tied to the thread in Facebook where people were match-making carpools to Uber home from Newark to SOMA when the trains stopped running.  My otherwise technologically savvy spouse doesn't do Facebook nor does he have the Uber app but I found him a carpool buddy.)

Where do you turn on alerts and can you restrict them to JUST the line(s) of interest?  And we are interested in case anyone learns anything more about NJT tomorrow.

Looks like the trains will be up and running on a regular weekday schedule.

Yes...well I'll be darned. I underestimated NJT, at least as far as them getting back to their regular schedule. Now of course we'll have to see if the service resembles the schedule.

I'm just happy I don't have to deal with the friggin bus!

Haha yep.

All trains are being diverted to Hoboken. Switch problems at the tunnel

I just heard it was the result of a pedestrian being hit by a train somewhere between Newark Penn and New York Penn.  PATH is cross honoring.  At least we have Hoboken.  Other lines don't have that option.

ETA:  Seems pedestrian was hit near Secaucus.  According to report update, service has been restored to NY Penn Station with delays. Midtown Direct Trains are being rerouted to Hoboken.

I signed up for the NJ Transit alerts for the specific trains I ride to and from work yesterday afternoon.

As of right now, I have received 21 emails from them so I'm unsubscribing.

ETA: 22. I just got another one while I was typing this.

These are not normal times. I’d keep the subscriptions set up.

1 1/2 hours to Hoboken given all the diverted trains...

it is just too many alerts.  much easier to just check the website or the app.  And the alerts never come when there are minor delays when you are waiting on the platform.

Their alerts are so bizarrely formatted -- you get just one line per email, so a simple statement will require half a dozen messages! I assume there is a reason for that, although I don't know of any other entity which operates that way.  That's a large part of what makes them annoying.

NJ Transit texts me more often than my wife does.

Most recent alert:  Midtown Direct trains are now running to NYP.

24 in total. They sent another 2 emails while I was unsubscribing.

I set up a rule in my email account to send all the NJ Transit alerts to an "Alerts" folder. I ignore that folder completely until I need an alert, and then I only read the most recent one or two. When I have the information I need for that moment, I delete the entire contents of that folder, and then I ignore it again until the next time I need the info. It's proven to be a pretty effective system for me.

Great idea!

I have my moments....
