National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. On October 27th, 2018, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will have it’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, an awareness campaign to promote the disposal of old and unused prescription drugs. ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team) has set up designated drop boxes in the county at various locations.

from Robert Roe:  The Drug Take Back Day is a great way to get rid of unneeded prescription medicines.    My advice is to dispose of unused pain relieving medications as soon as you no longer need them.  Break them up (so they do not fall into the wrong hands) and simply put into the regular garbage.  This way they are disposed of right away and you do not need to wait for a drug disposal day.

Note that the garbage in Essex County is incinerated so these mostly carbon compunds are completely burned.   Also note that when drugs are collected on Drug Take Back Day, they are also taken to this same incinerator.
