My front License Plate is missing! archived

What do I do? I have never had this happen!

Yeah; no; don't care about that. Need to know how to get new plates!

call dmv, check the web site.

Scarlet,

I think the suggestion to "call the cops" was more for in case someone uses your license plate on their car. YOU may be blamed for something you didn't do.

True; didn't think of that...duh.

Website has nothing.....

Go to DMV, turn in your old, plate and get a replacement set. Ask them what you should do about the missing plate.

Lost plates are one reason tickets carry the car description.

Yup thanks Bern. I called the MPD they said come in and file a report. This TOTALLY sucks.

Happened to me. Yes, file a police report and keep it in the car. If you have to drive to pick up new plates, you'll need the report in event you get pulled over because, well, you'll be driving without a plate(!!). (Yeah, am not sure this is technically legal but I confess to doing it.) Good news is, I went to DMV in Springfield when this happened, and I was in/out in like 10 or 15 minutes.

Also bring the remaining plate in with you to DMV office (bring a screwdriver and remove it once you are parked there) as you will need to "surrender" it.

how about check at the car wash?

I've seen, more than once, a license plate fall off at the local car wash.... last week the front plate fell off a 300C, the staff found it and put it back on...

One of my tags was stolen, but not the other. What should I do?
First, you'll need to report the theft to your local law enforcement. They'll issue a report. Take it with you to your local Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Agency along with the one remaining tag and they'll issue a new set. You'll need to show your current registration papers and proper ID. The cost is $6 to replace a standard set; $11 to replace specialty tags.

From the MVC web site.

Reporting lost or stolen plates
If your plates were stolen or you have lost them, you must first obtain replacement plates at any Agency or Regional Service Center . While you are there, you will need to complete a Vehicle Registration/Plate Status Form (BA-1) that states that the plates were lost or stolen and gives you verification status – keep this in a safe place as proof that you notified MVC.

You can also notify MVC in writing. Write a statement describing what happened and include a police report if they were stolen. Include your name, mailing address and license plate number. Send mail to:

Motor Vehicle Commission
Customer Advocacy Office
P.O. Box 403
Trenton, NJ 08666-0403

You will receive verification of the updated license plate status in the mail. Save the verification in a safe place as proof that you notified MVC.
