Music that lifts you up

@DaveSchmidt thanks for reminding me of The Edwin Hawkins singers. Dance to this and you will feel like you can fly!

If you like Spirit, try this.

Oh, Morganna, I don’t just like Spirit. They’re one of my all-time favorite bands.

In defense of the "plant thing"! I used this in fashion show I did for my costume designs. Go 2+ minutes in for the real Indian sound.

Because I love all things Stevie and because I love India.

 You’re right. It works perfectly!

I’m sorry Steveland.

I like Tiny Desk sets as well, but for vocalists and new music I’m hooked on the Colors site. This guy is a little better known now then when I first heard of him. Be careful with Colors you’ll lose the whole day...

Celtic stuf... Planxty, Black 47 and so forth.

My favorite Chieftains.  When I blast it my cats come running and at least one will get scooped up and join me in the dance.

The only thing better than one Higher Ground are two.

That was on one of his best streaks. Music of My Mind,Talking Book, Fulfillingness First Finale, and then Songs In The Key Of Life.

Fun fact:  On the bottom of the back cover of McCartney's 1973 Red Rose Speedway album, the original pressing had We Love You Baby imprinted in braille as a message to Stevie Wonder.

Thread drift, but consider, too, the concurrent streaks of artists like Al Green, Elton John, Joni Mitchell and George Clinton. Simply an amazing musical period.

 Pink Floyd.  Led Zeppelin.

Literally. "Lifts You Up," by Beth Hart.

Always bought Al Green and Joni Mitchell.

Drifting further I was supposed to sell giant wings to P Funk who just took the idea and made a variation. I wound up selling them to Rick James for his back up girls. He had me add chase lights to them. Wound up being the start of a fun friendship with Rick and the band until he went around the bend. Flew costumes to LA and went with them  on their appearances on Soul Train and Merv Griffin. Traveled with them once on the bus to Ohio to do a few concerts, one had a new group opening, The Police.

All music should be this silly.

As it happens, just last night I watched the Miles Davis documentary Birth of the Cool on Netflix.

Well worth the two hours.   Put it on your Covid-19 must watch list.

Amazing musician.

hmm, India reminds me...

Probably because John McLaughlin is playing guitar.  (and Ron Carter on some tracks)

Love this. To me, fusion music (the blending of two or more musical genres, styles, cultures, etc.) is very exciting and fun. And it satisfies my politics: appreciation, acceptance and validation of all peoples and cultures and allowing them to influence us and make us stronger, deeper, more grateful individuals.

PLUG: One of my favorite bands, Brave Combo, from Denton, TX, mixes it all up, often beginning with polka and adding Latin, Polish, Czech, soul, R&B, classic rock and classical influences (like Satie, below). Often performing in 5 languages in a single show. And always with a sense of humor.

Maybe three weeks ago, I heard this on WFMU. And as I was listening, I thought about Freddie Mercury, and how he probably already had AIDS when he was singing this and how he was still enjoying life and how we should still do our best to enjoy life despite COVID-19 (safely, of course), and was enjoying my musings until the song ended and the DJ said, "42 years ago - that's when this song is from..." and then all I could think was - omfg, I am so old. Still, it's become my song of the season.

Since everybody's at home, looking for musical inspiration, I thought I'd share two Spotify playlists that I made last summer to take on vacation. I've listened to them many times and I think they work very nicely.

I think if you click on them, they should launch and play in your Spotify app.

The first one, 4 hours, 16 minutes, is a mix of pop and international sounds, loungy, groovy and a great way to travel the world while staying indoors.

The second one surveys the world of pop and rock and roll, from old to new, from country to soul, most of which you probably haven't heard, but you'll enjoy, all in a free-flowing organic blend. 3.5 hours.

All I ask is that you let me know if the links work and if you dig the mixes.

Tonight heard K D Lang sing Hallelujah in the Tower of Music tribute to Leonard Cohen.
