Mugging victim hospitalized after being attacked on way to Church Saturday around 5:00 PM.

Was this the incident on Academy and Third?

Residents in the area of 3rd Street
and Academy Street immediately dialed 911 when they came across a male
victim walking in the area bleeding from the head earlier this evening.
The report prompted a police search of the area for a black male who
was reportedly armed with a weapon that robbed the man then assaulted
him with the weapon shortly before 6:30 p.m.

The suspect is believed to be around 5'8" tall and around the age
of 18-years-old. The suspect was possibly occupying a red Ford Focus
when he fled southbound on Academy Street.

This is, I believe, the third robbery on that part of Academy since May. (I live on 5th and Academy.) Is there some reason there are so many problems at this spot? While it is not the most glamorous part of town, it doesn't seem like it should be a dangerous location.

Sorry to hear this! My kids walk through that neighborhood to and from SOMS almost daily.

Ugh! So sorry to hear...

This corner seems to have alot going on - why can't they put a camera up?

I drove past yesterday, and there was a police car parked there for several hours. The car's windows were tinted, so I couldn't see if their was an officer inside--I imagine not. Don't know if it was left there as a deterrent, or if the car just happened to be parked there. I think there were two other incidents in that vicinity earlier this month. Again, seems to like an odd place for so many problems.

Outside of a CHURCH for pete's sake!

I've heard the victim received 20 staples on his head at the hospital but, thankfully, is doing well. Perhaps because he is a former Trustee and State VIP, the Village will start policing that area more. He is the second person I know of who was seriously injured in a mugging while leaving an OLS Mass.

Is there a church at 2nd and Academy?

The attack took place near Academy and Third. The property of OLS extends to Academy at Fourth Street.

As I mentioned, there have been multiple muggings on Academy, at 2nd and 3rd, since May. (I live at Academy and 5th). Has this historically been a problem area? It seems totally safe to me (though obviously not!). Have they caught any of the perps? If not, I wonder if it is someone who lives in the area?

Years ago car thieves used to stash stolen cars in the OLS parking lot. That's where we found my sister's car

From SO Police Report:

On 7/11/2015 a resident was pistol whipped during an attempted robbery on Third Street. Detectives working the case developed information which led them to an East Orange address. Late last night detectives located the vehicle believed to be involved in the robbery and interviewed the registered owner. Following the interview two individuals became persons of interest and were subsequently arrested and charged with the aggravated assault and attempted robbery in South Orange. The arrestees are identified as Jihta Hale, 191 Midland Ave, East Orange, 23 y.o.a. and Shamiyah Bryan, 191 Midland Ave, East Orange, 20 y.o.a. Bail has been set at $250,000.00 with no 10%.

SOPD is just amazing~ Kudos!!! question

Excellent work! I hope the victim feels better soon.

No. The church is for Christ's sake.

snake

Good work (no surprise there) by the SOPD. Now here's hoping the victim fully recovers physically and emotionally and the two worthles lowlifes who did this spend a loooong time in a small cement space.

Well the mugging certainly isn't grin

I am so glad the victim is doing better and SOPD caught the thugs that did it but again, why aren't there cameras in the area if this area is a problem? Perhaps the town should split the price w OLS? Seems like a no brainier to me but I guess I'm missing something here...

It's not by ols. It's a block over, correct? All residential

This is the corner with the 4-way stop, right?

One can only hope that the perps will not be participants in the Shawn Custis Do the Crime But Don't Do Any Time program that seems so popular in the NJ courts these days.

It's actually a pretty good location if you're looking to mug somebody - not that I speak from experience! You have a steady trickle of people going to/from the train or town, but not so many people that it is "crowded." This gives you a target and it gives you isolation. Big ups to the SO police for snagging those guys.

When I walk to and from the train in the winter, it's an ever present thought. During the summer, not so much, but if these keep happening in broad daylight, I'm getting myself a taser... Well, maybe just a bigger pepper spray
