Mt. Airy Lodge; I did

Just to take 2 days off work and get away Jennifer and I booked a trip to Mt. Airy lodge.  Had heard a lot about it never been. (We are from California)

What we found was not what we were led to expect.  No 1950's venue.  No heart shaped bath tubs.  What we found was a very new Resort and Spa.  We often go to Miami to the North Beach Canyon Ranch Resort and I'd have to say that what we found at Mt. Airy was as good if not nicer than the Ranch.

And, it had a Casino that let me leave +$60.

I asked about the heart shaped bath tubs and was given a location to find where old photos of the old venue hang on the walls.  I never made it.

Not a bad place.  I'd go back.

Wait, no champagne glass jacuzzi? WTF?

They changed the whole place when they got the "go" on gambling.  Nothing stays the same!

I must say I am kind of disappointed at the lack of 70's kitsch.

What about that place in New York with all the theme rooms, have they changed?  I can't remember the name.

Kew Motor Inn.

You can't beat 70's kitch like this.

We went there for my high school senior class trip in 1978...it was all it was cracked up to be.

A mirror on the ceiling.  See, if the entire ceiling was mirrored it would be trashy, but just one mirror is tasteful. cheese

My parents took me and my siblings there sometime in the mid 90s, before it closed down before it became the current hotel and casino, and it had this whole family resort thing going. It had a massive video arcade and family friendly acts like Gregory Hines , his less famous brother, and their dad as "Hines , Hines and Dad." and Andy Rooney and his 47th wife (Andy Rooney? Mickey Rooney ?which ever Rooney that was in movies with Dorothy from the wizard of OZ) appearing there. A former employer of mine worked there towards the end and his job was to market it as a nice place for over the road truckers to stay.

Theres a road leading out of the casino that is full of abandoned resorts. This place was huge for vacationing before traveling by powered flight was considered something normal for everyday people.

This cracked me up! Mickey Rooney was famous for his role in the series of movies in which he played the character "Andy Hardy"

Andy Rooney, he of the wild eyebrows and curmudgeonly demeanor, was a correspondent for "60 Minutes" I don't believe they were related

I can still hear the jingle from the TV commercials in my head: "beautiful Mt. Aiiiry Lodge!" You'd think if they revamped it they would do a new ad campaign to get the word out, wouldn't you? Because I wouldn't touch the 70s kitsch with a 10-foot pole, but might consider the newer incarnation.

You can still find the champagne glass tubs! Cove Haven operates three resorts that are just like those 60s and 70s resorts where our parents honeymooned! LOL
