You need to be signed in to identify you as having a paid subscription.
Is your stuff on OneDrive? You also need to be signed in for that to work.
problem resolved, it seems, but unsure why it popped up now and less than pleased with Microsoft's uncommunicative pop up messages.
Apparently, it had something to do with the syncing of my files with One Drive. When in mid sync, indicated by two blue arrows in a circle pattern, the sign in message would pop up.

I regularly receive by email and download Excel spreadsheets. A few days ago, I started getting messages demanding that I sign in to my Microsoft account to download the files. Today, I started geting demands to sign in just to review my own existing Word docs. What is going on here?
