Metal Trash Cans?

Are they allowed? Need something to deter rodents, raccoons and the like.

I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed.  home depot still sells them.

They are allowed.  Problem I have found is that they rust.  You can find plastic trash cans with fasteners that the secure the lid so that raccoons and the like cannot easily get in.  An even better deterrent is to reduce/eliminate the amount of food that you place in the trash cans.

Our plastic latches seem to break and eliminating food doesn't seem to be in my very near future....3 boys in the house and no garbage disposal. Is there a particular brand of plastic trashcan that works well?

Raccoons chewed off the lid of my plastic trash can. Is there a place that sells the lids individually? Or something to spray on the lid and bin that will deter them?

I have a metal trash can (in Mplwd). I use a bungee cord to secure the lid from raccoons opening it. Haven't had issues, and no rust on this can yet, and it's been a few years.

We're using bungee cords on our plastic cans.

Thanks. Where does one get bungee cords...home depot????

Yes, Home Depot - I bought this pack years ago which I really like:

I've never used them, but I'm told the mint scented trash bags deter raccoons.

Bungee cords are available in different sizes at Home Depot, you can also find them in Target, I believe they are in the Auto aisle

Mint bags are doing nothing for us. I'm going to check HD today....do you just attach the cord to the pail handles?

The cord I have is the right size to stretch tight when hooked from one of the can's handles to the can's handle on the other side, by going over the top of the lid, and passing through the lid's handle on the way.

96 Gal Trash Can

It's much more expensive but I've had this one from Home Depot for the past 8 years and nothing has gotten into it.

We use them at our house.  They have really improved the breath of the racoons on my block.

Raccoons don’t touch the trash at my house. They prefer to tear holes in my roof instead.

On the expensive side, but I've had this for about 8 years after trying bungee cords and plastic locking tops. In those 8 years, I haven't had a single animal issue with the garbage and it holds up very well to any punishment the garbage collectors try to inflict upon it.

One item to note, it's much heavier than a standard plastic can. And it doesn't have wheels (unless you buy/rig them separately).

Mint bags did nothing for us either. I thought about changing to metal cans but yes, they rust and not deep enough for our trash.

The squirrel have eaten holes through all of my tops and destroyed and get into the trash bags and destroy them as well. A friend suggested sprinkling blood meal on tops of the cans and it absolutely works! It smells a bit, but nothing you can't stomach. Haven't had a problem since. I got my bag at Millstone.

Keeping garbage in the garage until trash day solved the problem for us.

Depends on when your pickup is. They usually get to our house between 6 and 6:30 in the morning. I always put it out the night before since I know I won’t get out in time to get there before them

Depends on whether you use your garage for your car(s).  If you do, there is likely to be no room for garbage cans in the garage.
