I thought it was Jefferson traffic that had the right of way over vehicles on Maplewood Avenue.
+1 I don't get this either...assuming you mean that drivers on Jefferson are stopping on the flashing yellow and waving through Maplewood Ave drivers. I've seen this too many times. It is so dangerous.
I've had similar happen coming up Parker at Maplewood Avenue trying to make a left onto Maplewood Ave. Drivers coming from the north on Maplewood Ave, the through street, stop to let me make the left. They have the right of way--I don't!

Is not a four way stop! The traffic moving straight through on maplewood Ave has the right of way over traffic turning right or left on Jefferson. It's very dangerous and confusing for cars waving on cars to make the left/right turn. Then you have people honking from behind if you're waiting til the car pulls through the intersection.
PSA over.
You have this intersection exactly backwards. No wonder there's so much honking and waving
Sorry, I realized after I posted that I might have been confusing. I know traffic on Jefferson has the right of way. Im talking about cars on Maplewood ave, which stop and let a car, facing them on Maplewood ave make the left turn across them. Traffic on Maplewood ave going straight on Maplewood ave in both directions (to Maplewood Village/to S. Orange) has the right of way over traffic making the left turn up or down Jefferson. Am I being more clear, or confusing the matter even further!

Not if the left-turning car reaches the intersection and stops before the straight-going car does, right? If I'm going straight and a car turning left gets there first but waits for me, I'm waving that driver onward because he or she has the right of way.
Nope. Regardless of who gets there first traffic going straight through on maplewood ace has the right away over traffic turning off maplewood ace onto Jefferson.

yeah you are wrong... you have a stop on Maplewood Ave in both directions.. going straight doesn't automatically give you right of way as DaveSchmidt points out... sounds like you are the problem

No, the left turner always yields to cars going straight regardless of who gets there first. Back to driver's ed!
@daveschmidt. You are doing the right thing by following the rules of the road.
I don't know if actual statistics support this, but a friend who is a cop has repeatedly stated that many accidents on local roads occur when the driver with the right of way tries to "wave someone through."
If the OP is driving The Mystery Machine, I would give him/her the right of way.

Pretty sure what you posted says the opposite. The car going straight has the right of way over the left turner.
DaveSchmidt is correct. It's the order of arrival that dictates who has right of way.

Consider this conundrum of your way: How long should I, as a left-turner, wait at the intersection for the straight-goer to reach it?
and this is why we have so many accidents if people don't know the rules of the road

That's at an all-way stop. Maplewood/Jefferson is not an all-way stop.

The same as any other situation in which you yield. You can turn whenever you have enough time to complete the turn before the other car gets there. Same as if there weren't a stop sign there.

The cartoon I can't get out of my head stars the Zax.
"If drivers approaching from opposite directions reach an intersection at about the same time, a driver turning left must yield to approaching traffic going straight or turning right."

Same rights of way apply. Although I'm open to reading any manuals or other authoritative sources that back you up.*
*Back you up figuratively, that is -- not away from the flashing lights.

Key words: "at about the same time." That's right-of-way No. 3 after "First to stop = First to go."
I honestly don't understand how some people get licenses.

Read the whole thing. Final rule:
When it Doubt, Bail Out.
If you technically have the right of way you can still motion the other driver to proceed. This is exactly what the OP was complaining about, bit it is perfectly OK.
I have not idea what the OP is saying but that intersection is NOT A FOUR WAY STOP AND THEREFORE WHATEVER THEY'RE SAYING IS WRONG. Jefferson Ave. traffic has the right of way. PERIOD. SHEEEESH.
Hi, Wendy. Scoobydoo clarified that he or she was basically taking Jefferson out of the equation and just talking about the right of way between drivers at the two-way stop on Maplewood Ave.

Well, sure. You don't have to yield to somebody two blocks away! But the rule is: if there are two cars on opposite sides of a street with a stop sign, the one going straight has the right of way over the one turning left.
See last entry below:
Controlled Intersections
An intersection where traffic is regulated by a traffic signal or regulatory sign is a controlled intersection.
Always stop at a multi-way stop or stop intersection. Always yield to the driver on the right if arriving simultaneously at a controlled intersection with regulatory signs, such as a four-way stop. Always yield to any driver already at or in an intersection.
When approaching an intersection controlled with a yield sign, slow down and yield to traffic on the intersection roadway even if this requires a full stop.
When making a left turn at an intersection, yield to oncoming traffic and all pedestrians within a crosswalk.
