Major Accident and Delays on 78 East This Morning

Sometime around 7:45 am it seems a major accident took place on the Eastbound side of 78. The eastbound side was closed and the Westbound side was crawling. I was heading West from the Maplewood on-ramp and hit traffic immediately. According to reports, there are STILL delays.

When I got by the area I saw a helicopter parked on the highway along with ambulances, firetrucks and policecars. There was a demolished car with its roof cut up, which appeared to be halfway up a tree trunk. Very concerning. If anyone has more info about the status of the passengers, please post. Would definitely avoid the area if possible.

One car overturned following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 78 Thursday morning, leaving a woman in serious condition and causing major traffic delays in both directions.

The crash took place in the eastbound lanes at milepost 47.6 in Springfield at 7:27 a.m., State Police said. The eastbound right and center lanes remain closed as of 9:35 a.m. and there are still heavy backups through the area.

A helicopter landed on the highway to fly the driver of a Toyota Corolla to University Hospital, according to authorities. Her passenger was brought to Mountainside Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The man driving the other vehicle, a GMC Acadia, was not hurt.

State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Thank you! Glad to at least know there were no fatalities. Looked horrible.

Saw the aftermath this morning around 9:15 while traveling (at a crawl) west. So glad to know the silver Corolla driver survived.
