Jon Stewart Leaving Daily Show

First Colbert and now Stewart. Well, at least now I'll get more sleep!

T
Jon Stewart, the comedian-turned-faux newsman who transformed The Daily Show into a cultural powerhouse over the course of more than a decade, is leaving the show later this year.

Stewart announced his coming departure during the taping of Tuesday night’s show, and Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless confirmed it in a statement

Bring back Craig Kilborne!

Said no one. Ever.

Whoa!!! Maybe he wasn't up for another election cycle.

Aw, I said that for the first few weeks of his tenure at the Daily Show.

I am so sad. Who will channel my partisan rage harmlessly into laughter?!?

Will John Oliver come back? He was terrific last summer!

Odd to see the announcement at top of nytimes.com, right next to Brian Williams being suspended for six months - maybe not odd, just a lot of change

This is certainly upsetting.

Maybe he will replace Brian Williams

F^@K!!! First Colbert and now Jon Stewart. Where oh where will I get my non-partisan news from?

I had a feeling after he got a taste of directing a film that he wouldn't be long for The Daily Show. I so miss Colbert (sorry Larry Wilmore).

Since Williams is now suspended for 6 months, he won't be back. I'm hoping they give it to Lester Holt -- he really deserves it.

TV "News" just became 70% less truthful. Really, will there be anyone left to call the MSM on their BS? John Oliver would be a good replacement.

Stewart nailed it last night, Williams is the first (and most likely the only) to be held accountable for their lies about what went on in Iraq.

11 possible replacements. Honestly, I've never heard of the majority of them.

Interesting list, and I've heard of all of them and consider them all very funny, except maybe Cameron Esposito who has a solid 25 and everything else is a little shaky IMO. If the show is to retain the same format, you would need to hit the ground running with someone who is media-savvy, is utterly jaded at the whole system we're being fed and yet has a certain level of class, intelligence and respect to be able to get interviews with the same people he/she lampoons every night.

John Oliver would be perfect, but there's little reason other than money for him to go back to doing every night what he now does weekly, and to be fair his HBO show's format suits him a little better. I do like Baratunde Thurston, who I've seen on Real Time before. What we need though, is like a young mix of Patton Oswalt, Chris Rock, Lewis Black and Doug Stanhope.

But it's Comedy Central, so for all we know it'll end up being Carlos Mencia.

amy poller or tina fey would do awesome

I saw this on FB and had to share

Brian Williams is off the air ......
at the same time Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show

ISNT IT OBVIOUS ????

Several articles have pointed out that Jon Stewart has distinguished himself in finding talented individuals for his program, who have excelled there and gone on to successful careers (both in and outside of "fake news"). So, his replacement could be someone nobody is thinking of right now.

I noticed that my list of comedy stereotypes was a little dude-o-centric. So I'm going to throw in Morgan Murphy and Kathleen Madigan. As a matter of fact, I think Kathleen Madigan would be an awesome choice to host it.

Sarah .....What is obvious?

He most certainly did -- I think to his detriment. The latest crop of "reporters" are so unfunny to me, and the long-timers who did stay were never funny to me. I think in the last year Stewart has been carrying the show on his own and it must be exhausting.

Nobody IMHO will ever "replace" Jon Stewart and the show as we know it will cease to exist. I'm so sorry for us.

Let's remember, Jon Stewart (as he says all the time) is a FAKE newscaster! Although he clearly is a far better informed and talented interviewer than anybody in "real" news today.

Right, so who better to take Stewart's chair than... Too soon?

Never liked Stewart. Too preachy for me.

I liked his comment on leaving. Paraphrasing: He said he wanted to have dinner with his family. He has it from multiple sources that they're lovely people.

It's supposed to be a joke - with some Irony - of course Stewart is a FAKE newscaster, and Williams is supposed to be a serious journalist - but duuuuhhhh .... the implication is that the FAKE newscaster is better suited for the job than the real ones, and the real one is ....fake.

I've seen it posted elsewhere (as well as heard people say) that they seriously think Stewart should replace Brian Williams. He is so good at his job that people actually believe he can -- and should -- replace news anchors. Look at how many young folks only get their news from The Daily Show.

I think Larry Wilmore is doing a terrific job with the Nightly Show.

IF he wanted to, I suspect he could be an excellent anchorman. But I don't think that's what he is "restless" to do. I've read that he recently made his directorial debut, so wondering if that's the direction he'll take. It will be interesting to see where his career takes him. He is in his early 50s, and I don't think retirement is on his radar yet.

I don't see one of the three major evening news programs even considering offering him an anchor position. It's too far outside the culture of how they hire, and would alienate most (if not all) of the producer staff, who are extremely important. I know there are folks who don't respect or watch/read NBC News, The New York Times etc., however the people who work there take their work very seriously and would not work for someone brought over from Comedy Central.
