John Chau - American missionary. His goal was to bring Christianity to the Sentinelese - inhabitants of the restricted North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal, I believe.
So, he bribed some fishermen to take him to the islands. On his first attempt to kayak to North Sentinel Island, he was wounded by arrows and retreated to the fishing boat.
Undeterred or perhaps, not taking the hint, he made another attempt to land and was killed by the islanders and buried on the beach.
Now that's pretty entertaining.
