James Hardie siding

Looking to put siding up on our house, but want it to look great and last. One company/product we've looked at (a friend reco) is James Hardie "HardieShingle" siding. Anyone have an experience with this product?

Thanks.

Brent

It is basically concrete. Almost indestructible. It is pricey but the theory is that you will save money in never having to put siding on again.  Requires skilled installation.

I have not installed it but it has a good reputation.  Of course, any siding is only as good as the installation, so be sure to check out the contractor.

My present house, not in Maplewood, has Hardieboard clapboard siding, and I have mixed feelings about it. It was factory painted and some of the paint chipped during construction, leaving little gray chip marks showing in several places. I don't know if this effects the durability. There re also a few places where the material itself has chipped. Other homes in my area, which were painted on site rather than factory painted, have suffered significant fading in the decade or so since they were built. The appearance does mimic wooden clapboard but I suspect that if it isn't well installed the longevity benefits are probably not as great as they are supposed to be. And it does ultimately need to be painted. I think you would have to live in a house a really long time to have to replace wood siding--the expense and  nuisance factor is the painting.

Hardi Siding is a cement based product.  It should outlast the house.  It does need to be painted, like wood.

We have Hardipanel siding and Boral Truexterior trim on the second story of our house.  I ordered the Hardie from Home Depot and the Boral from Myles Kelly. The Hardie has a stucco texture and the Boral has a wood grain texture.  Both neither expand nor contract, won't rot and supposedly hold paint very well as a result. The Boral is impervious to water - will never rot.  Alex Construction did the installation and I think it looks great. PM for the address if you want to do a drive-by.
