Interlibrary Loan at South Orange Library

When I lived in Maplewood I was a frequent user of the Maplewood interlibrary loan program which gave our wonderful small town library the resources of a big city institution. Now I live in SO and, while I have heard rumors of an interlibrary loan program, I cannot find any reference to it on the South Orange Public Library (SOPL) website.

Does anyone know if SOPL has such a program and, if they do, how one accesses it to see what is available at other libraries that are connected to SOPL?

I know the SO library does not participate in BCCLS but they might participate in Jersey Cat, which is the inter-library loan program used by the Maplewood Library. It is worth a call or a visit to the SO library to find out. Rebl membership will allow you to go to member libraries in person and borrow materials that are available on the shelf but will not usually extend rights to placing materials on hold or ordering them through the inter-library loan program. Still, it is worth getting a rebl sticker on your library card so you can take advantage of this service.

Mary, thank you for the links. I am familiar with the REBL program that allows me to travel to participating libraries to borrow and return books but I was looking for info regarding interlibrary loans like the ones that are available at MW.

Is there info about such loans on those web pages and am I just missing it?

If only there was some kind of library lady who could answer these questions.

We've gotten many books and dvd's from other libraries but had specific requests. The SOPL is amazing in being able to locate them. Their sources are quite extensive.

So, you ask for them at the desk? Is there a way to see what is available online?

Klinker, the Library can get most anything for you from anywhere. Just shoot an email to Librarian@sopl.org with your request (including your name , title, author if a book,DVD name, etc) and they will request it for you from JerseyCat. You can also call them (973-762-0230) or come in and ask at the circ desk or reference..

Maybe not as hightech as BCCLS but certainly available.

Is there any chance that SOPL may join BCCLS anytime soon? I really enjoyed the breadth of access that the system provided during my time in MW.

Klinker , you'd have to ask the Director I suppose. I am just commenting here as a "user" of the library with info that is available to anyone. Nothing "official" in my posts cheese

Klinker, I moved to SO from Maplewood too and I also miss the BCCLS system. Maybe if enough people ask for it the SOPL will consider it!
