inexpensive accommodations for out of town visitors

Hi - we live in SO and have visitors in from Europe for the next 2 weeks.  They made the mistake of setting up an airb&b that was in a nearby but not safe neighborhood!  Looking for good suggestions on where they might stay instead.

You could check out Les Saisons, the B&B on Elmwood. My in-laws have stayed there multiple times and been happy with it.  Not sure about the prices.

I just drove past the hotel across from the turtle back zoo on Northfield and they gave the exterior a facelift. I can't speak personally to the quality of the rooms but could be worth looking into it!

+1 for Best Western (Turtle Brook Inn) across from the zoo, although my experience was a long time ago.   I think it's reasonable, clean and affordable.  

How did these Europeans realize the neighborhood was unsafe, what sort of documentation did they source post-booking?
