Big Rainstorm (was Tropical Storm) (was Major Hurricane) Ida

I can not stress enough how rare a tornado emergency is anywhere. In NJ it is unheard of.

I’m beginning to get worried. This rain is unbelievable.

As someone who's been chasing tornadoes for 16 years, it takes a lot to render me speechless. This did it.

No reason to worry yet here. At the moment just a lot of rain. But keep your phone near you so you get alerts.

bye yall we just got the tornado warning. see ya in the basement.

A new warning has been issued for this storm that spreads up much of NJ, as seen below. While Maplewood is not in the warning, should the storm survive that long it could impact Maplewood in about an hour. Please keep an eye on your phone for warnings and should one be issued, take shelter in a basement (preferable) or interior room. Again, to reiterate, Maplewood is not currently in the warning but should the storm survive it could very well be impacted.

I just received a tornado warning alert on my phone. I’m in Maplewood.

Maplewood is not currently in the warning.

One saving grace is that the storm should outpace the warm front. If it can cross the front, which appears to be south of Maplewood, the tornado potential should decrease to near zero. Let's hope that happens.

It was a flash flood warning. Scared the living sht out of me.

I have a terror of bad storms in general and tornadoes in particular. It would be good to get some calm and reassuring advice as I am actually shaking.

Also I have elderly parents in the Philadelphia area. They have no cell phones and were oblivious to the tornado that touched down about a mile from them a few weeks ago.  They are under a watch too and i worry about them. They have no basement and their downstairs is open plan, I.e. no windowless room. I really would like some sort of reality check about how much I should worry about them.

Philly should be out of danger by now.

 K thanks ....

The bigger threat now becomes the rain. Flooding is going to be a big issue.

Does that mean there is no longer a possibility of a tornado in Maplewood?

I don't want to say the threat is zero, but it's certainly low.

Flash flood emergencies have been issued for much of central Jersey. I wouldn't be shocked to see similar further north.

Tornado warning has been allowed to expire.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Wait, no, it's southeastern Essex.  We are southWESTERN Essex.

Not really sure why they warned it anyway.

Upton feeling left out, like Mt Holly was having all the fun?

I agree -- hardly shows up on the radar compared to the one in central NJ

SPC seems to think there’s still a tornado threat for this area. Not sure I agree, but they certainly know best: https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md1677.html

edit: reading the discussion closer they think LI is where the greatest threat is.

Flash flood emergency for Maplewood

Did you see that lightening cluster over the south end of Manhattan just now?

Oh yeah. Pretty good lightning here. Nasty circulation to the north too.

Circulation is now tornado warned. Near Ft. Lee heading northeast.

We are getting hammered here. Millburn Ave is a running stream near Trader Joe's now. Too bad I can't post video

EWR just recorded 0.5” of rain in six minutes. 5”/hr rates.

Local Weatherunderground weather stations Montrose and Memorial Park reported 6.06 and 6.85 inches, respectively, when I checked 2 minutes ago. That’s about as much as I can remember, in a 24 hr period here,  for several decades.
