Big Rainstorm (was Tropical Storm) (was Major Hurricane) Ida

Good (Wednesday) morning 9/1/21

A few refinements to the forecast, which remains largely on track.

Light rain showers this morning, becoming a bit heavier this afternoon.

Heavy rain moves in early this evening. Expect heavy rain this evening and tonight, with the possibility of 1"/hour rainfall at times before midnight. Flash flooding most likely during this period. Late this afternoon and this evening there is a risk of a severe thunderstorm as well.

Rain ending Thursday morning. Total rain 3 - 6"

The NWS has the entire region in a Flash Flood Watch until noon tomorrow.

There is a very real tornado threat for much of NJ today.

 yay

You guys are like 6 pounds of good news in a 3 pound bag today.

I moved to NJ from Michigan in 2007 to serve as a pastor. My ordination service in The Mitten went on only because the person in charge broke the rule of cancelling for a tornado watch. The day I arrived in NJ (Wyckoff, ugh), I asked a lay leader what the tornado cancellation policy was at our church. He laughed and informed me we don't get tornadoes in NJ. He meant to say "yet ... just wait ten years while we f-bomb the planet some more."

Forecast seems to be backing down a bit? Channel 12 saying like 3-4 inches of rain total whereas yesterday they were saying 5-6. Only the NW corner of NJ is still in the 6" range.

I'm hoping these fairly long dry spells suggest a lower total.  I know the heavier rain is supposed to come later.

Looks like most of the rain is tracking north of us.  Will we still get some rain tonight?

We will get the heavier rains tonight. Home Depot only have a few sump pumps in the store. Guy in the plumbing aisle said some contractor came in Monday and bought all of the pumps, only left the wimpy 1/3 horsepower cheap ones. Even the discharge hoses are gone.
I think we’re gonna get a good soaking tonight.

Wednesday Evening Update 9/1/21

Forecast still on track with minor updates.

Heavy rain will begin to move into the MAPSO area after 6:00 and continue until the early hours of Thursday morning. 3 - 6" likely by the time the rain ends.

There are some thunderstorms embedded in the system and we could get some gusty winds, especially Thursday morning, with steady 20 - 25mph and gusts up to 30mph.

Current Radar image below. System is moving towards the northeast (from bottom left to upper right). The track has been a bit to the north today, which has kept us dry until now, but our luck will run out later this evening.

The area is under a Flash Flood Watch. Heavy rains may overwhelm storm drains and local roads. If this happens, do not attempt to cross or drive through flooded areas as it is difficult to assess the depth of the water and flowing water, even if only hubcap depth, can sweep a car or small truck off the road.

The NWS has issued a Flood Warning that may have come over your phones for the Passaic River from Wayne through Chatham and Millington. Because some of the affected area is in Essex County (Fairfield and some areas near Roseland) the whole county gets the alert. At this time the Rahway River at Maplewood and South Orange is not near flood stage.

I strongly recommend you have your phone set to get emergency alerts as there is a potential for severe thunderstorms with this system.

A substantial tornado just occurred north of Philly.

rain has started, 5 minutes early.

Flash Flood Warning for Maplewood

Very, very strong tornado southeast of Philly near Mullica Hill right now. If you know anyone within the current tornado warning, they need to be taking shelter now. Serious, serious situation.

Edited to add pic of tornado

TORNADO WATCH IN EFFECT NOW UNTIL 1:00AM
There is a cell within the storm that is showing rotation and appears to have spawned a tornado north of Philadelphia. A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for the formation of severe storms, including hail and high winds. It does NOT mean a tornado is immanent but that should a tornado warning be issued you are aware and prepared to take action.

This watch applies to BERGEN, ESSEX, HUDSON, PASSAIC, and UNION counties.

Be prepared to take action if a tornado warning is issued. Action includes seeking shelter in a room or space without windows such as a basement.

Please have the alerts active on your phone!  Please do not depend on this thread for timely notice of a warning!

What action do you take in a tornado? I don't think I've ever seen one in real life and dont know anything beyond TV go in the basement actions.

Go to the basement is the best advice.  Stay away from windows.

The Storm has recycled and is now producing another tornado near Bristol, PA -- heading directly for Trenton.

Edit: there is a tornado emergency for Trenton. This is extremely, extremely serious. Tell anyone and everyone you know there to get to an interior room/underground.

This is ridiculous-- a tornado like that happens once every 50 years in New Jersey.

 Less than that.

The NWS in Mt. Holly has issued a severe thunderstorm WARNING that I think Upton will pick up shortly for our area about this storm.

This is for the storm that produced the first tornado

Same tornado different angle

I can not stress enough how rare a tornado emergency is anywhere. In NJ it is unheard of. Luckily it appears to have weakened some now.
