We loved a few stays at Hotel47 in Rome. Beautiful rooms and a really great location
Buena Sera!
We went last summer and when in Rome, stayed at the St. Regis. When we got to the Amalfi Coast, we stayed at the Santa Caternia.
We stayed at Il San Pietro in Positano for our honeymoon. Will never forget the beauty!
In Rome we stayed at Algergo del Sole Al Pantheon. It is deluxe and the location can not be beat.
In Rome we were very happy with Hotel Sistina.

A lovely small very charming hotel fabulously located 1/2 block from The Spanish Steps, Hotel Hassler, and in the other direction, 1 block from a major metro station. Easy walk to almost everything ( except the Vatican which is in another part of the city). The rooms were tiny but we liked the hotel very much.
What ever hotel you choose in Rome - go for a central location. It is MAGIC to walk out of your hotel in the evening and join the passeggiata, when Italians go for their evening walk/fiesta.
For the Amalfi coast we stayed in Sorrento, a lovely and beautiful small city , which is the gateway to the Amalfi coast. Every square inch of Positano is fabulous, but from Positano you have easy access ONLY to the other towns on the Amalfi coast , while from Sorrento you have easy access to the Amalfi Coast, plus easy access to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri and Naples.
So, if you are staying on the coast for just a few days of relaxation Positano is great, but if you want to see Pompeii, climb Vesuvius or venture into Naples you might consider staying in Sorrento.
We stayed here -
Get a room with a view. It is a splurge but it is worth it. Trust me it will be an experience of a lifetime. Words can not describe........
We loved the Hotel Nazionale a Montecitorio. Next door to Parliament, walking distance to many sites and Giolitti gelato shop is around the corner.

I have been to Ischia and it's truly amazing. It was my favorite place of all we visited on the Amalfi coast - it's not as touristy as the places like Positano and it has a nice, relaxed vibe. If you go there, stay in St. Angelo. I can't wait to go back.
Spent a lovely honeymoon at Hotel Miramare in Positano. That was three decades ago, but it still looks gorgeous.

Hotel iQ, http://www.iqhotelroma.it/en/, is wonderful. Large rooms, excellent and free WiFi, you can do your laundry, and a really friendly, helpful front desk. It's right near the opera, and in the "hotel" area. It's also quite reasonably priced and well located.
We just got back from Rome and the amalfi coast last night. We were there for 2 weeks. You have to come into Stony's, ask for Laura my wife, she will be thrilled to show you pics. Unbelievable stuff!! One restaurant in Positano
FATTORIA LA TAGLIATA (the pics on there website don't do it justice)
This place is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. (I've been all over the world) It will be well worth the time (don't miss this place) Off the beaten trail, all local people. ALL food grown on property, including meats, eggs, veggies, poultry....
ENJOY!!!!

There are so many options in Rome---some of our budget friendly--and quite niece--ones were not far from the main train station, yet close to the subway and walking distance to many of the main attractions. It is easy to check out whether your desires/budget will be met by looking at the reviews on Trip Advisor.
We stayed at Santa Caterina and loved it.

There is also much to be said for staying in Sorrento as your access to the Amalfi Coast, plus easy access to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri and Naples. We spent several days in Sorrento and then down to the Amalfi Coast.
It all depends on what you are looking for--lux relaxation or affordable access to as many sights in Rome and the Amalfi region. Have fun.
Thanks.. These suggestions are all very helpful. I've been doing a lot f research and cross referencing between sites.

If you want to stay at the best hotel in Positano I would recommend the Le Sirenuse . We stayed there 2 years ago and was something we will never forget.
Jim...as much as I would love to stay here the prices about $1300 a night is slightly over budget
We stayed here at Casa Cosenza in Positano, for 5 days back in 2008.

Beautiful views of the town & beach!
if you are considering Sorrento-we stayed for 4 nights at hotel regina. a little more modern ( I like old) but right on the water. our room had two terraces and the view directly across was mt vesuvius.
not cheap-but much more reasonable that many of the classic hotels. was very clean and great service.

So this is what we decided so far. Rome hotel reservation courtesy of a mol buddy. Got a great rate for 4 nights. Then we are going to rent a car and drive to ravello for 2 nights and do the amalfi coast from there. Then we are going to drop the car in Naples and head over to ischia for 2 nights. Then back to Rome and home. Very excited! Thanks everybody for all of your suggestions.

Sounds glorious! I admit that I am a bit jealous!
I'm following closely as we are hoping to do a trip to Italy in the next year or so and the Amalfi Coast has been floated as one of our destinations. Let us all know how it goes.

Going in early October. Any recommendations for hotels in Rome or positano? Also, has anybody been to ischia or have information about it?
