Just noticed that the SOMSD schools website is announcing an early dismissal for Monday, 12/2 due to forecasted weather.

Just got the call. The only time mentioned was the 2pm closing of central administration.

I wouldn't be surprised if people thought (incorrectly) that 2pm is the early dismissal time.

They clearly said 4 hour day and early dismissal.

Let the record show that mammabear would be surprised.

Saying mostly rain tomorrow now. Thoughts?

You ask a zillion questions with EVERY GD storm. Yes, it’s all about you. LOL

Yes, the weather only affects me. What the f are you talking about? Seeing some reports saying it might now be a rain event- wondering what the MOL weather guys think.

 Actually they travel ALOT so would be affected by almost every storm...

We all travel, have work, kids, etc. Not all of us ask specific questions with every freaking storm.

relax yourself. Scroll past. Silly how you proceeded to ask even more specific Qs for you about school then complain about me asking if it seems likely it could become all rain ( a question that would surely affect everyone, traveling or not).

 Doesn't look like the temps will drop below 274 Kelvin tonight, so it seems the water will stay in its liquid form.

 Evaporational cooling will probably aid in at least transient sub-freezing temps. That coupled with cold advection on the back side of the low should get the job done temperature wise. But again, I’m skeptical it’ll be enough to get really big totals.

 Thank you!

According to the district website - it is a 2pm dismissal on Monday.

https://www.somsd.k12.nj.us

 The email said half day schedule.  At SOMS that's 12:30.

 I realized that I had read the website too quickly and edited my previous post.

Are you sure it's 12:30?  The call said a 4-hour day. SOMS starts at 8:15, so wouldn't that be a 12:15 dismissal?

Lol I didn’t ask any questions about  school. Or my travels. Or my work week or anything else. Unlike you. EVERY time. I’ve never seen a Max thread without your questions. For like 10+ years.

Yes. For the record...the district  message was clear oh oh Four hour day.

So sorry to bother mammabear (and everyone else) with my questions about weather on the weather threads. It was unthinkable. I can’t imagine the pain I’ve caused.

Good luck to all with this storm (and the rest of your lives).

12:30 for the middle schools. It wasn’t the easiest notation for me, an aspirationally literate adult, to look up, even with Max’s hint, but this is what the calendar says under MMS and SOMS:

4-Hour Session: 8:15am-12:30pm

Ah.. I found a clear list right on the district's new website, and this would be a nice easy link to put on the home page announcement indicating the "4 - Hour Session".

https://www.somsd.k12.nj.us/about/hours/

12:30 was correct as per FilmCarp.

In any case, I hope it's clear to all parents because it's the teachers, principals, and the kids who will feel the largest impacts of any lack of clarity from this district communication.

It’s a standard 4 hour day. We’ve had many half (4 hour days) days so far this year. Maybe 6ish scheduled? It’s all the same and parents should know what time we pick up.

 Hear hear!

Crazy what people fight about and who gets to decide what others should feel.

Email from the town stated that town offices will be open and staffed as usual, leaf collection began at 5 am to clear roads for snow clearing later as needed, after school recreation programs canceled. Hope this helps.

THE NWS HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR OUR AREA from 7:00am today Monday 12/2 until 7:00am Tuesday 12/3.

Forecast for today:

Light drizzle changes over to snow after 9;00 am.

Snow, likely to be heavy at times, until midnight tonight, followed by snow tapering off until just before dawn Tuesday. Total snow 4" - 8"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The band of heavy precipitation is now appearing in the majority of the models and continues to extend over the MAPSO area in the forecast, so the NWS has upgraded the Advisory to a warning as confidence in the forecast has grown. This type of brand is still a fickle feature to model, but the consensus across the various models is encouraging (or discouraging depending).
There could be some sleet at changeover, but the main feature of this storm is a steady heavy wet snow lasting several hours and then a drop in temperature tonight into the 20°s.
Snow map below, and a screenshot of the hires NAM model showing the snow band at about 1:00 this afternoon.
For what it's worth, the NWS forecasts the snow as 5" - 7" but I see a wider uncertainty than that.
 Model consensus supports it I suppose. Still, color me a little surprised.
 More settling, or more uncertainty, the way you read it?
 Many of the models are at odds even with themselves a little. They show intense banded structures but still totals only around 4 for our area. I’m a bit surprised NWS bumped up, but that could be a function of trying to be more safe than sorry along the snow total gradient.
It just switched over to wet snow here in MW.
 Mixed snow and rain, to be technically correct.
well I actually got my snowblower started ( after doing nothing to it after last winter) and I have 1 tankful of gas-so that means we wont get any meaningful snowfall, or we will get a foot plus.
How late at night may one run a snow blower? I'm not asking about the law, I'm asking about the bounds of good neighboring. It's either late at night or early in the morning.
 It’s clearly a judgement call. Some important factors might  be your neighbors’ sense of humor, any possible hearing loss, and their implementation of their Second Amendment rights.
It depends on a few factors.
1.  How well do you get along with your neighbors?
2.  How big/loud is your snowblower?
3.  Do you only do your property,  or do you do help your neighbors and do their sidewalks?
4.  How much snow has fallen and how much more is predicted?
5.  Is the storm big enough that most people will not be commuting the next day for work?
That being said....I have no clue.  Just kidding.  I would say around 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.  However, if the snow is heavy and has some depth to it where waiting till the appropriate time will make it too hard to do, then I would say do it whenever you can. If you do your neighbors sidewalks too, I dont think they will mind what time.
When I was plowing snow I would see contractors and homeowners clearing their sidewalks at all hours of the night.  Most neighbors will forgive you under the circumstances
