Help Needed Now for Local Syrian Refugees

local peeps, syrian refugees need help immediately and locally: (got this from Morrow Church, 973 763 7676)
Today, First Friends reached out to us about a family in need. The father has been in the US for a while, having sought and won his asylum case. He has been living in a shared room in Boonton, NJ, while First Friends helped to arrange for his family to come to the US.
The rest of the man's family -- including his wife and three children (ages 4, 8, and 13) -- arrive this evening. They will be staying in a hotel tonight to celebrate their reunion. On Monday, they will move into an apartment in Montclair, NJ, which First Friends arranged for them.
Right now, the family's most immediate needs are:
housing (for 5 people) from Wednesday night through Monday (and/or hospitality by the host family or others during this time)
hosting for Thanksgiving dinner
After this week, the family will need financial support for rent, friendship and hospitality as they settle into their new home, and support from a social worker at First Friends to prepare for necessary appointments, school registration, and language classes.
We also would like to provide ongoing support for this family, including helping them transition from social services to independence and self-sufficiency and, most of all, helping them feel a sense of security and belonging through the friendship and fellowship of our church community.
Please contact the church office right away if you would like to help support this family.
Blessings,
Mark Goodman (Church Council Chair), Rev. Brenda Wheeler Ehlers (Associate Pastor), and Rev. Dr. Brad Motta (Senior Pastor)

I saw this. (That's my thread up there.) My apartment is now vacant, and I'm happy to make it available to the family. However, I'm out of state for the next month so can't coordinate in person. I have a family member in Maplewood who has keys and will help. We'd need to arrange for bedding, towels, etc. Can we pull this off? Or will they get a better offer?

Thankfully the family has had several offers and has a comfortable place to stay until they move into their apartment and a welcoming place to enjoy Thanksgiving .  If and when additional support is needed we will be informed.

First Friends is an organization that lends hope and support to detained immigrants and asylum seekers.  Morrow volunteers work with First Friends and visit detainees to offer support.  It is very possible that First Friends will reach out to Morrow again to help a family in need.

Kthnry, you may want to reach out to them.  http://www.firstfriendsnjny.org/.  If you wind up hosting a family in your home it is possible Morrow volunteers can offer the support needed.  I used to coordinate when we hosted homeless families through IHN and would be happy to help coordinate if you wind up hosting a family.  Call me.  I'll PM you my contact info.

They'll be living in Montclair?

A nice piece on the news last night about Morrow Church, First Friends, and the support being given to the above mentioned Syrian refugee family.

What station was it, Joan?

CBS.  They repeated it this morning.

Thanks, Joan.

Here's the link in case anyone wants to share this story that should be getting much more coverage: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/11/25/morrow-church-welcomes-syrian-refugees/

I'm very thankful to live in a community that has such compassion for all our neighbors -- near and far.

Anyone interested in donating to the Institute of International Education (IIE), as they are funding Syrian university students arriving in the U.S.  Great program.
