Heads up thread on Random Scams

I thought it may be good to collect some scam info just in case others might be duped.

I've see this one a lot - companies trying to get you to move your domain registration over to them for a lot more money then it should be - #1 offender I've received is from the Domain Registry of America.

This one I just got in the mail today: Workplace Compliance Services wants to submit an annual report for my business for $135.  Funny - I just did a Google search on them and a thread I wrote about this came up in the results from 1 year ago.  grin

Similarly to the last one - if you're getting visas to another country - there are many companies out there that look like government sites - they work, but they're just a middleman and taking the difference.  I almost fell for this one.

I have found a lot of "companies" are sending me mail wanting to help me comply with something or other for my small business (annual report, workplace signs, workman's comp, etc).  All of the listed prices are exorbitant, and it's much cheaper (and not complicated) to do myself.

Someone posted on FB that phone scammers are using the actual main phone number for the Morris County sheriff's office as caller ID and seeking payment for false warrants, civil process fees, overdue IRS payments and non-appearance for jury duty. Caller poses as a Sheriff’s Officer, provides a name and threatens arrest if no payment is made.

Most, if not all workplace signs are available FREE from N.j. Dept. of Labor.

Unfortunately, there are many compliance rules of which employers are not aware. For instance:

I-9 forms must be kept on all employees unless verified by e-verify. Forms must be kept separate and secure.

Medical information must be kept separate and secure.

Records of accidents (or absence of) must be compiled every year and posted until April of each year.

and on, and on, and on.
