Has anyone done an escape room?

I'm really interested in trying one.  I see there's one in Montclair:

Maybe we can have a MOL escape room road trip.

I feel like we've all been places in a nation-sized escape room the past few months. I'm still working it out.

Not in person.  I have done several on-line.

My son did the one in Montclair for a birthday party. If you don't figure it out in time, they just let you out. It's a challenge without fear.

I have done one in Boston and also one in Montclair. It takes a certain type of person to enjoy it. Unfortunately my mind is not set up to enjoy the experience; although very other member of our group enjoyed it. Definitely worth a try.

I did one on a cruise last year - was called a puzzle room, which is more accurate I think. It was a lot of fun. There were some very clever challenges.

There are several different escape room companies in Montclair (and around NJ). I've only gone to the Amazing Escape room in Montclair. They have a Groupon for 2, 4, 6, or 8 players. https://www.groupon.com/deals/...  Note there will be an extra charge of $2.50 per person for 'booking fee', in addition to tax, when you actually register online.

The Amazing Escape room seems to have the lowest age limit of the local escape room places (Their FAQ says: Q: How old do I have to be to play?A: Anyone can play, but players under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult). Some other places recommend 13+, or 14+, or are for adults only).

My almost-9-year-old was the one who really wanted to go, and she did enjoy "Crusader's Alley", which is their most kid-friendly room. You can ask the 'game master' for 3 extra clues (we needed to use all of them - plus a bonus one - so it's challenging enough to stump adults). We ended up being grouped with another family who registered for the same timeslot, and our kids got along great and took turns reading the clues as we found them, with us parents playing a supportive role.

I also did the "Case Closed" room with an adult group, which is more traditional sleuthing, harder clues, most stuff is high up (above kid level), so it was enjoyed by the adults, but would be less fun for kids.

Neither of these was scary, it was mostly like playing a game, with a twist. I suspect some other escape room places might have a more of an 'edgy' or haunted house/dungeon feel.

I did it at the one in Montclair with a group from work (organized by our employer.)  It was fun and they let you out if you don't manage to escape within the allotted time.

Did one on a cruise too. It was mostly fun for the kids (16,9,7)

Thanks for the info - I'll try it one of these days.   I think it's a great concept.

Did one in NY as part of work team building event. It was fun and a challenge. It's a logic game and good for work teams because it lets you see how people think and react to problems (to a degree).

I did one once but I was with the wrong kind of people. In Little Falls, I think.

There's also one here in Jersey City that I've heard good things about.

On their site it's $28 per person.

The 8 person groupon comes out to $21.50 per person.  2 person groupon is $24.50

Did one with co-workers last winter in NYC.  We didn't escape the room, but we had a lot of laughs.

My husband and 13 year old son did one in New Orleans while I was at a conference and LOVED it. It was one of the highlights of the trip.

Thought this might be an interesting article for the thread.

we did this as well.  It was relatively early in my current job, and I was still the "new boss."  I agree that it was a really good opportunity for me to see the way my team approached problems, and the degree of teamwork.  The task we had was successfully completed by about 20% of groups, and while we technically did not "escape," I counted it as successful because we were literally opening the lockbox with the key to escape as the staff opened the door to end our session.

It was an enjoyable team outing.  And much better than the typically lazy (IMHO) default of "let's go bowling!" I had told my group that I was open to any team activity except bowling grin
