Ground hog proof fencing?

Mar 25, 2025 at 8:06am

When I built my vegetable garden, I fenced it on all 6 sides (incl. top & bottom), making it deer, ground hog, raccoon & squirrel proof.

Now I want to protect my flower garden.  While deer can jump over a fence, how tall does a fence need to be to keep the ground hog out?

Is height the issue if they are able to dig under the fence?

True, but having laid a foundation of landscaping timbers in a shallow trench, it is not going to be an easy access to the critters.

they could employ a couple of beavers though…

I doubt they are going to do any jumping or climbing. I'm toying with the idea of starting a deer thread with some tips for gardeners. I've lived peacefully with all of the wildlife here by defensive gardening. Maybe the word should be de-fence-ive!

I admit that woodchucks are the most challenging. They do slightly avoid feral cats. Any interest in adopting one?
