For some reason I've still got Bowie on the brain, so here he is (unsurprisingly) setting the tone for the decade that follows..

Still up there as probably my favorite of his songs.

OK, so again it's actually Saturday morning but if I remember before daylight, it still counts.  That plus I can certainly provide endless fodder for this thread.  So I'll again flog one of the most criminally unknown bands ever, who broke small in the 80's.  Try to ignore the video being a textbook example of everything wrong with 80s videos, and hopefully you'll share my enthusiasm for the music..

I discovered this band only because I worked at the college radio station, and the music director who also worked in the the record coop said something like, "here, you think R.E.M's so great, listen to this" handing me Game Theory's Real Nighttime, which spoiled me for all those albums where every song isn't a gem.  I've been hooked ever since.

This video is one of the "hits" from their sprawling, brilliant hodgepodge of a double album, Lolita nation, released in 1987.  In my humble opinion, they're easily the most accomplished power pop band ever, if I have to label their music.  More important, Scott Miller was one of the best songwriters, in terms of sardonic wit, brilliant cultural references used to service the song, and a cutting take on the whole life and relationship thing not seen elsewhere.

After being out of print since the 90's, they're being re-released.  Apologies if nobody finds this interesting, but as I say, I never miss a chance!

C'mon children of the (Reagan) revolution, keep sharing your flashbacks!

Love Joe Jackson.  I remember one Saturday night in the 80's of having the choice to go see The Who or Joe Jackson.  I opted for Joe Jackson.

Here's another bad 80's video but great tune:
