Family Design Question

I am embarking on a home design project tomorrow and thought I might crowd source some design questions that I have. I have a side hall colonial.

We are updating our family room/tv room. We are ripping up old wall to wall carpeting and putting hard wood down. We are also demolishing two ugly formica built ins that flank french doors to our dining room. We are widening the entrance to the family room from the kitchen. The whole room is 13 1/2 feet by 14 1/2 feet.

Colorwise, I am attempting to start to veer away from the gold tones that I had previously used throughout the house. I am thinking of painting this family room a color called abalone (BM 2108-60). I have also already purchase a rug that is an oatmeal color and has rows of large olive colored circles. ( this is easy on the eyes while looking through the French door to the carpet in the dining room and the living room too)

To start I feel like I should buy a couch. It needs to be family and dog friendly (though I may try to train the dog off the couch). With that I have checked out some slip covered options from pottery barn and crate and barrel. A sectional might also work but I want to leave room to add a pop of color with a chair. I am worried though, that the slipcovered couches are too traditional for my taste.

Then I also need to buy a media stand to put under what will be a flat screen on the one available wall. I want to try and not be all matchy matchy and buy a media stand, coffee table and end tables that all match. But it is hard for me because I don't want to make a mistake. I would love to have some tufted kind of ottoman that could also be used a coffee table. ( we still have nightmares of when our youngest, who is now 8, dove headfirst into our previous wooden coffee table and needed emergency plastic surgery on her face) My husband just added that he would like to have some kind of wireless speaker system so that our smart tv could play music when we aren't watching it.

Finally, though I have a traditional house, I really love midcentruy/modern design. I bought Heywood Wakefield dining room furniture (midcentury)and have some red barcelona chairs in the living room. If anyone has anything insights they want to share - I am all ears!!
