Use Chowhound or OpenTable to give you all sorts of options given a location.
We recently had a fun time in a new pub called The Shakespeare at 39th between Park and Madison, but that is just one of a million places near Grand Central.
BTW: Have you been to the (secret) Campbell Apartment? It is only a bar but it is a beautiful space.
Docks on 40 and 3rd. ( mostly seafood).
Capital Grille on 42nd between 3rd and Lexington
Downstairs in GCS there is a food court with a couple of nice places to eat plus there is a Juniors.
Sams (italian) on 38th just off Lexington - (need a reservation and is small).
Cafe Centro - on 45th street entrance to the Met Life Tower (ok, Pan Am building for old-timers), large place and they don't rush you at all. medium price range for the area. you can get there without walking outside.
Not exorbitant.
Ok, the Oyster Bar.
What else?
