Chris did a terrific job grooming our senior dog at home. https://www.facebook.com/haveshearswilltravel/
We go to Puppy Love on Morris Avenue in Union (formerly in Maplewood) and we've been very happy there. The dogs hang out together in the waiting area or other areas of the facility, not in cages, while waiting.
I know of some doggie groomers who actually come to your house and do the grooming in their "doggie-van". Has anyone here had any experiences with one.....or more specifically, any GOOD experiences that you could recommend to others to try?

Kim is wonderful but she has no openings.
We love love love Bubbles and Bath on Parker, dog doesn't even mind going there, and the people are so nice!
Seconding that ^. Bubbles & Bath has been wonderful for us for years. Small and personal.
I have been to Petco, but my dog freaks out when placed in those cages. I love our current doggie-groomer but its a long schlep there and back - and frankly, I'm somewhat tired of doing that.
Do you know of any doggie-groomers who COME TO THE HOUSE and do grooming in their vans whom you can recommend OR do you know of any nearby doggie-grooming places where the dogs can play with other dogs while waiting and are not locked in cages?
