Confused on Greek calendar: feast or fast? ANSWERED

Sorry to be nuisance, Author and anyone else who knows the Orthodox calendar well. I'm doing the catering for morning at work on Monday (Prophet Elias), and have forgotten if it's feast or fast??? I'm 15 hours ahead of you. Many thanks.

I see our Canadian cousins have a lunch scheduled for Monday the 19 th. Seems right to me

It's more about what ingredients to use: do I include cheese, olives, butter? Or just plain fruit toast? (It's usual to serve warm buttered toast here) if I can do cheese, then I'll serve feta, olives, tomatoes, hummus and a variety of bread and crackers.

The clients are going to Church first, so I don't want to offend.

Thanks!!

Found the answer: THANK YOU!! >smile< >smile<

Well, 'Continental Breakfast' style it is! snake snake

Feast days aside..........in Greece rising early is not a big priority for many. Breakfast is sort of an after thought consisting of toast, coffee, juice and a cigarette or two. In many Greek restaurants you will find
"no smoking" signs posted and an ash tray or two on every table.

The exception is what they call either an English or American breakfast which has everything from soup to nuts. Your first inclination after having one is to go back to sleep............but that must wait till the traditional afternoon nap. How else can you stay up till 2AM to start the cycle all over again?

Service starts at 8am, finishes around 9.45. We serve our morning tea when clients arrive for the day's program, which tomorrow will be 9.46am. As they will have fasted until after the service, we'll offer the cheese, olives, tomatoes, bread/crackers and hot coffee because we're out for lunch soon after.

Some of my ladies still wake at 4 or 5 in the morning, even though they don't need to. Also, tomorrow we have some Romanians, some Italians and a couple of 'plain Aussies'. So, for them, it's a very long day. Which reminds me, I need to ring them and remind them it starts early...

One of the most fun experiences I have when traveling in Greece is the moment other visitors drop the language they are using and speak Greek. I have especially been delighted by some of the Aussie/ Greeks I have met.

One fellow I met at the Monasteries at Meteora moved to Australia with his family when he was about 3

Everything went smoothly except one item. His name was Panigiotis........and the Aussies just had too much trouble with it. So Panigiotis became Peter and and lived happily ever after.

And briefly he was a delightful companion high up on the mountains. Ironically we ended up speaking mostly Greek as it just seemed so comfortable..

The day that appears on no Greek calendars is tax day.

Hey, Author, you'll appreciate this: my colleague has his name day tomorrow. (Monday). His birthday is Dec 25th. question

Name days are wonderful...........they are also pretty busy I remember one time being in central Athens and grabbing a cab to take me to the Ferry's at Piraeus and the Islands. Well I hope to tell you that the entire 20 minute or so ride my driver must have gotten a dozen or more calls on his mobile.

When we pulled up at the docks he apologized that he had not been able to exchange a few words with me during the trip. Turned out it was his name day. I am sure he had a happiy one.

Then again birthdays still have their place. One year I met a young couple who were running a coffee and desert shop near me on the Island. The young woman complained to me it was her birthday and her boyfriend had gotten her nothing..............they had little money till payday.

So next night I took a ride with Grigorios to a Pizzeria where the owner had lived in the States and learned how to make Jersey style Pizza. Pizza in Greece is a probably the worst in the world..........but Jersey pizza is a gift from the heavens.

One pizza with sardines and some dark beer later our post birthday girl had a most happy time.

What exit on the Turnpike..........ha
