ChiRaq, new Spike Lee joint

I saw this new Spike Lee film this evening.  Wondering if anyone else has seen it and would like to share your thoughts.

Okay, I'll start.

I like Spike Lee and have enjoyed several of his movies. Unfortunately, this one, ChiRaq, is a lame concept executed amateurishly. "Brother, Where Art Thou," by the Coen brothers, took an epic poem and brought it to life in a [somewhat] contemporary scenario, and it flowed and maintained some humor. ChiRaq is so simple-mindedly tendential that you can't help but roll your eyes, constantly. Nobody in the cast looks the least bit comfortable saying the awkwardly rhyming dialogue. And it's awfully sexist in concept and execution. Spike wants so much to be "of the moment" and part of what he sees as the intellectually hyper-legitimate hip-hop culture that he embraces hip-hop's worst representation of women as sexual objects dressed and scripted to allure and entrap.

I'd avoid it.

"Brooklyn" was very good, if a bit dreamy and overwrought at times.

Unfortunately, many of his movies have missed the mark. The last Spike Lee movie I thought was worthy of attention and accolades was "Malcolm X" starring Denzel Washington.

also saw Creed and liked it.

Can only comment on Brooklyn. I wanted more. Not sure what. It's a lovely story. She is beautiful. The acting is wonderful. Definitely romantic.

Yeah, Chiraq doesn't beckon me.
