Chincoteague area travel ?

Anyone ever visited the Chincoteague VA area? Suggestions on places to visit , places to eat? Must see or must do activities? Not going during pony swim. Thinking mid April during spring break.

check if Wallops Island/Goddard Space has any public programs at the time of your visit.

Fried oyster sandwiches!

Nature walks through the parks--state & national?? you are very likely to see the ponies

Bird watching...Weather there likely to be milder than here in spring oh oh

I cannot remember the names of the restaurants we ate in, but we had a great time in a chill-lax sort of way.  If you venture to the ocean via a bike path, bring bug spray, the mosquitos are relentless and plentiful.  One of best memories is on drive home, soon out of VA, the residential vegetable stands; there are many but then all of a sudden none! so stop and load up- we had fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe and so many other fruits and vegetables on our table at home for weeks.

Even though spring comes earlier there, I don't think mosquitos will be out by April. I could be wrong. And, maybe others who know the area better than me will chime in, it can still be quite chilly there in April.

For places to stay, you should check out the Riverhouse Inn (http://www.riverhouseinn.com/).  It is close to Chincoteague/Assateague and you can canoe on the Pocomoke River behind the inn.

If you have time to explore the peninsula, check out Easton, St. Michael's and the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge near Cambridge. I did a three-day cycling trip around there in September and loved it. I've also spent some time in Berlin (voted "America's coolest small town" by somebody, whatever that means) and in OCMD, which might be kind of interesting in the off-season.

The nature center in the preserve has some great activities for families. We did (inexpensive) kayaking with a ranger, and the kids really enjoyed dissecting owl pellets and other activities.
