Why do food stores have two cheese sections? One is for "ordinary" and cheap cheeses, and the other is the gourmet-ish type.


My guess is price - when you're in the gourmet section, you expect the prices to be much higher.  If you put the gourmet stuff with the cheaper stuff - you would have many people complaining about prices at checkout.

There could be all sorts of psychological reasons. One could surmise that higher prices seem justified to shoppers if the products are in the "more exclusive" or "set apart" section (whether you're shopping for cheese, wine, suits, etc.).

Or it could be management and stocking the shelves.  "Ordinary" arrives in packages in boxes and is managed differently and by different people than the "gourmet".


The types and placement of store displays might also be negotiated with suppliers.  


You have bulk/mass market product in one area, and real cheese in the other.


Cheese Whiz is the one artisan cheese I've always liked. Velveeta ain't bad either.

 This.  Many stores also have two bread sections.  They have the stuff in the bakery, and then the stuff baked elsewhere by large corporation bakeries and put on the shelves. 

Wait, actually bread is in three sections, the bread aisle, the bakery aisle, and there are always a few shelves in front of the deli section.


Yeah, I noticed "cheese food" when I was in college. There's too little milk in it for them to call it cheese legally, so it's a cheese food. So my friends and I extended the idea and called it cheese food product substance and things like that. Pretty ridiculous. Cheese-like substance? Stuff reminiscent of cheese? Hints of cheese? Cheese memories?

 Actually, including these two venerable cheese stuffs means there are at least 3 sections for cheese. And maybe 4 - Shoprite puts the Velveeta out by itself. Now that I think about it, 5, at least in Livingston.

I always figured that in some factory someplace they're cranking out tons of food product. One processing line dyes it yellow, adds salt and it's Cheez Whiz. Another adds sugar and it's Marshmallow Fluff. Another adds freeze dried onions and salt and it's onion dip. And so on...


I love the title here.

 Marshmallow fluff doesn’t have any dairy in it, though it does have eggs. Its primary ingredient is corn syrup.  Don’t ask me how I know this

 I always wanted to like that stuff, but I hate it. It doesn't even taste like marshmallows.


And for those who would like to try some different cheeses:

Once a year, on Saturday before Thanksgiving, Vasa Lodge Linnee has their annual 'Import Sale' at the Saltbrook elementary school in New Providence (10 AM to 3 PM).  In the Imported Foods area, you will find a variety of Scandinavian cheeses.  The selection varies from year to year (we are at the mercy of what the importer has on hand), but over the last 3 years we have seen:

  1. Norwegian gjeitost (goats cheese), both 100% goats milk and 50/50 with cows milk.
  2. Norwegian noeckel ost
  3. Swedish farmers cheese
  4. Danish Havarti (plain, with dill and extra aged)
  5. Danish blue cheese
  6. Danish Danbo (with and without caraway seeds)
  7. Finnish Lappi

No. 3 & 4 are not true cheeses (made with rennet), so they do not age, but they keep well (unopened farmers cheese up to 12+ months).



I think I love #2 on your list, but in my head it is nugelist, lol. Whiteish cheese with small seeds of some sort? I think maybe caraway? love it on wasa crisp bread if that's it! Anywhere else to get it during the year?
