Bail and Lawyers for Detained Immigrants

A couple in California wanted to raise bail money for immigrants in detention so they can be released and then hopefully reunited with their children. In a short time they have raised $15 million which will also pay for lawyers.

I just coincidently posted about them on another thread. Thanks for including the link. I also mentioned a local effort in the past to sponsor a family from Syria, I think it was through a religious organization. Couldn't we do something in SOMA to sponsor a family of these refugees while they await their trial. Perhaps someone on this board is a member of an organization that would have the standing to initiate such a project.

First Friends of NJ/NY https://firstfriendsnjny.org/

and

NJ Alliance for Immigrant Justice https://www.njimmigrantjustice.org/

come to mind as excellent resources for getting involved.  Money is useful but both organizations also do specific hands on work, including visiting detainees in our local ICE warehouses.  Many local religious congregations support their work as well.

Thanks! I've been all over the map with ideas from trying to persuade a friend to foster and offering to help with the finances  to pitching my ex husband on a business plan to start a fair trade business with people in Guatemala. I can't stand watching all of this grief and not trying to do something. I'll reach out to these groups and see if there is something that I can contribute. Maybe my teaching certification could be of use and I was once conversational in Spanish. Actually did my practicum with ESL students in Newark. I'll check it out.

A friend said a few local women are becoming child advocates.

ETA Just found First Friends on FB and I'm following.

Morrow Memorial Church in Maplewood has many members actively involved in visiting and advocating for detainees in the Elizabeth detention center.   They do this through an organization called First Friends.   Morrow also sponsored and continues to support a Syrian Refugee family.  I believe several synagogues in South Orange have also been very active in helping Syrian Refugee families.  If anyone reading this would like to help I suggest reaching out to FIrst Friends : https://firstfriendsnjny.org/ or to   Brenda Wheeler Ehlers, the associate pastor at Morrow Church who has spearheaded this effort.

Thanks sarahzm, I'm following them on FB. I'd visit  the detention center if I can hitch a ride. I'm a terrible driver with a worse sense of direction. I thought if there was an opportunity to  use my skills as a former art teacher I could contribute some enrichment. Not the most practical gift but art making can be great therapy.

You might also follow the One World, One Love FB page. They help to settle refugees in NJ, some in Elizabeth. They help to set up apartments as well as support the families as they begin their lives here.

That's great, I will. I also hope that someone else sees this. I'll resurrect my old Political Activism thread and post these links. Who knows maybe a few more people might join in.
