anyone familiar with salvation army pick up

We have a lot of stuff: clothes, a few pieces of wooden furniture, various household goods...probably enough to fill a mini van with the seats removed.

how do they work the pick ups?  do they expect you to leave it outside?

I'm combining pick up with another person in another town.  the bigger items are already stored her  garage which is really only a car length from the street.  truck could easily back into the driveway.  we would like to just pile everything in the garage the night before.

Do they pick up from a garage?  Main concern would be bad weather and also if they don't show, it has to be hauled back in.  Someone would be there to direct them what to take.

i just started filling out the form...doesn't look like they let you pick a time frame...so that won't work.

My experience was mirrored by friends in another country, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the same in your area. To be fair, Salvos and all charities are often overwhelmed with donations, and a lot of goods are dumped at various collection sites.

Depending on the crew you get, they might decide not to lift something “too heavy” or ‘too bulky”, or might decide something is “too worn or marked” when it’s actually antique or the wood itself is designed to age in this way (in this case the item was 180 years old and in perfect condition), wouldn’t take any books and few appliances (citing risks about working condition).

In the end, we went with another charity that was more accommodating and from which we’ve since purchased many bookshelves and filing cabinets.

what was the other charity...i just don't want a 'for profit' place.  I've done good will on 22 in the past (their only issue is they won't take toys), but it was problematic.  you have to go to the side door and ring and bang..and go inside and get a nasty attitude from the worker inside telling you to go to the side door....which no one is answering.  I once dropped off stuff (wheelchair) at goodwill in monmouth county when I was otherwise in that area...they were better, but its not really worth the trip in gas and tolls.

Did you try the Good Will drop off center on Morris Ave in Millburn? I have always found them to be helpful - they carry anything heavy inside for me and always ask if I want a few extra bags on my receipt.

pickuplease.org

The VVA - Vietnam Veterans of America. They pick up rain or shine. But they do not pick up furniture that cannot be easily carried by one person.

i always forget that's there.  nothing is very heavy, maybe 20 pounds at the most. ..its just a lot.  some stuff I would have preferred to sell, but at this point its just clutter and I want it gone.

My other charity doesn’t exist in your area. Sorry!  But you’ve got a couple of good suggestions...

I remember reading some time ago (a couple of years?) about NCJW having a thrift shop. Is that still operating? Would that be any help?

probably going to go with good will on Morris Ave.  just finished bagging up the clothes, hopefully there is a decent day next week to pull things out of the garage...definitely will be easier to drop off at my convenience rather than wait all day for a truck..
