There's also a new place, Holleys Seafood, on Valley btwn Jefferson and Edgewood (near the Map Building). Don't know anything about it, just saw the sign.
Good discussion. I was wondering myself how the food was. It's so cute with the little benches and chairs outside to just chill and eat. I hope more people comment on their experience.
Got take-out from Holley's recently -- delicious fresh fish, expertly fried, and some good sides. Recommend!
It is so good !! The proprietors are so nice and help you through the process. We go for the 10-piece fish with shrimp. They provide wheat bread and tartar sauce--assemble the fish sandwiches at home with 2 deliciously seasoned filets per sandwich. Their shrimp is lightly seasoned and very good. Try it once and you'll be hooked (pun intended) at Just Fish.
Is it a proper fish and chips place? Is there a salt and vinegar option?
It's not heavily breaded--my gluten-free spouse loves it (both the fish and the shrimp). And because it's not heavily breaded (if at all--unsure) I doubt the vinegar option would have a target to soak into.
Try it once--there's a 5-7 minute wait on most orders as they cook to order. We now call ahead--hoping they can make a go of that hsitorically unlucky location.
How does one eat breaded fish/shrimp if they're gluten free? Do they use cornmeal instead of flour/breadcrumbs
@shh, yes they use cornmeal.
Just Fish is a long standing business that started in Newark and run by good hard working people. They had a restaurant on So. Orange Ave years ago and do a lot of festivals. They have fed me well over the years and the owner is an old classmate of my husband's.
I love their new fresh look with the purple and white. They have the same set up on a corner down the road on So. Orange Ave in Vailsburg.
Give them a try and wish them well for continued success.
Definitely going to have to check this out ... as soon as the temperatures moderate a bit. It's walkable from our house.
I searched online but couldn't find a menu. Is it just fish/shrimp grits/fries
I am going to try it. Like I said, I am so happy this thread was started. I can walk there too. Sac is right though, as soon as the temps cool a couple of degrees I am on it. Would love to sit outside on the benches, relax and try their fish offerings.
Thanks all so much for the great info. Would've written sooner but we've been a little busy getting little dk off to sleep away camp.
So it's a great chance to try these places and decide if they'd be OK for little. Being a fish lover, the answer's probably yes.
Just tried it and didn't like it much. I had the fish and shrimp platter. I prefer Roys on South Orange Ave. It wasn't that it was bad, just not my kind of fried fish. The batter or breading just wasn't up to snuff and there were lots of bones. The fries actually were bad though. They went right in the trash.
Towards the end of last year, the ever changing hot dog stand at the corner of Springfield and Boyden Pkwy became Just Fish. I kept expecting to see a thread begin, but it never did. So I finally got around to asking if anyone's been and how it is.
Two Yelpers have good things to say, discounting the first review.

Fish is at least a change from the usual fast food fare around here. Hoping to hear good things, or we may have to actually try it!
