Anybody bought a mattress lately?

There was a nice piece in New York mag recently about changes in the business  but I'm about to get serious about it and wondered what experiences folks here may have had with both the buying process and the mattress. So many new buying options and mattress designs since I last bought a mattress.

I bought this one for my daughter on Amazon recently and she loves it!

I stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn last year and the mattress was the most comfortable thing I slept on ever.  I forget name of co. but its available for sale.  I have it in mind to get one though its sort of on the back burner.

Wow, the reviews are great on Amazon for this mattress and the price looks very reasonable, too. Thanks for the tip.

Hey, sac,

There doesn't seem to be consensus in the comments on Amazon about whether this is a "firm" mattress. How would you answer that question? Thanks!

Ditto for the Hilton Garden in Morgantown West Virginia.  Stayed at countless hotels and motels. Easily the best

i looked but didn't buy...my 20 year old mattress is comfortable but wearing out....the new ones tend to be too bulky.  They are much deeper.  I wouldn't be able to get in bed. unless I didn't use a frame.  The plush was nice when I first laid down, but seemed too soft after a couple minutes.

I'm sure I can find an 'old fashioned' mattress at some point though

will I be able to get my sheets on these deep mattresses?

I got an old fashioned mattress at Macy's.  Is very comfortable.  A lot of sheets today come made to fix the deep ones and they work fine on the old fashioned ones as well.

I tried a foam mattress and did not really like.

Get a low profile box spring and it'll be much lower to the floor

We bought a sleep number bed about 12 years ago and it still sleeps like it's brand spanking new. We love it so much we bought one for the guest room so that when one of us is sick, we can sleep in separate rooms without either of us sacrificing our comfort level. And I don't think we've ever had a guest who didn't make a point to remark on how comfy the bed is. We simply could not be happier with them.

I bought a Charles P Rogers and love it - of course the cherry on top is my heated mattress pad-- something about getting in a warm bed in the winter is one of my favorite things

It is a bit firmer than some memory foam mattresses, I think.  I haven't slept on it yet, so I'm not a real good judge.  I just went and laid down (lied down?) on it for a few minutes and I would say that is is firm, but definitely not "hard".  Memory foam firmness is definitely different than innerspring mattress firmness.

Many older sheets don't fit on the new deep mattresses.  (BTW, that memory foam mattress I posted is NOT deep.)

I'm really thinking about getting one of these the next time I replace the mattress on my bed.  I slept on one at a hotel once and really liked it.  But they sure are pricey!

We got a great queen mattress 2 years ago at Ikea for about $400.  Mid-level price/features.   Actually brought it home factory-rolled in a Prius, unrolled it and aired it for 3 days as it rose to full dimensions from its compressed state.  LOVE it.  Also, my kid, who is 20 still loves her Ikea mattress from when she was 3 (twin size).  It has held up very well.

Go for it. Wait for one of their sales. I absolutely love my Sleep Number bed. Although now I hate traveling as I want to be in my own bed. I did not like it for the first few months but I'd never go back.

I do not recommend Saatva. I ordered one for my daughter based on reviews here a couple of years ago and it was never as great as advertised and after a year it was lumpy.

We also have a sleep number bed, and love it.  We've had ours for several years--I forget how many.  At one point it developed a leak  and it was replaced for free.

We have purchased our last few mattresses from Shovlin Mattress Factory in Fanwood. Excellent mattresses and excellent customer service.

You can choose your desired firmness, edge support, etc, and they are very long lasting. Got ours and both kids' mattresses there. Much better than the previous ones we bought at Macy's.

We definitely had sticker shock when we bought ours, but we've had absolutely no regrets about it.

We had to replace the pump on the one in our master bedroom last year. It was out of warranty long ago, but they still gave us a considerably reduced price on a replacement pump.

In all fairness, insofar as one might trust online reviews it should be pointed out that the few people who don't like the sleep number beds seem to REALLY HATE them. Based on my own experience that's almost impossible for me to believe, but I suppose there are all kinds of people in the world.

Check out the mattress underground; it explains how mattresses are constructed and what you should look for.  I ended up going with My Green Mattress which is a hybrid coil, latex and is ecologically friendly.  I find it very comfortable, although it doesn't have as much "rebound" as I thought it would from the coils.  You can get mattresses in different depths and combine with a low rise bed frame, so that's not really a concern.  Also you should test out the different kinds of mattresses in a store before you order online to get a sense of what they feel like.  Some people don't like the marshmallow sinking feeling of a memory foam.

For me, the problem with memory foam is it gets too warm. Obviously some people would count that as a benefit rather than a drawback.

I'm really happy with the Sleep Number as well.  My mattress eventually started causing me bad lower back pain.  I was so unsure about what firmness to replace it with, I finally decided to go with the Sleep Number.  I love it.  Very happy with the investment.

I've been interested in a Sleep Number bed for a while, but every time I go to the web site and try to understand the options, I give up. Eight models (for queen size) ranging from $899 to $4,999 -- more decision-making than I can deal with.

I went to the store on Route 10.  They will steer you to their best selling model, the P5 or something like that.  You can test it out at the store.

We bought one of these a couple of years ago. Its really awesome.

They do something to alleviate the warmness associated with memory foam.  Just rotate the matress when you change your sheets.

I've always steered clear of the sleep number bed because I don't understand how support can be adjustable. What exactly is in it that supports your back?  I assume it isn't a typical bed with coils/ springs?

It's air.  It doesn't bobble around like a water bed. You can inflate the sleep number mattress to whatever firmness suits you.  Each sleeper has his or her own control.  So I like my side softer, and my husband likes his firm.  This bed is the only one I've had where I don't wake up with a sore back.

hmmm. People rave about it. I am still skeptical. It's an air mattress lol!

Which hotel chain has them? I think I need an overnight on one to be swayed.
