Any info on the restaurant Sutaugo (spelling?) ?

I've driven by the restaurant a few times over the past few days and the front windows are papered up and announce a private event.

Sutagao - someone posted on FB that they spoke with the owner recently and was told they plan to relocate and open on Springfield Ave. later this year.

Sorry to hear this news. Suspected as much though... I wish them well on Springfield Avenue. Truthfully, that spot seems to be a little snake bit. Las couple of owners haven't been able to cut it.

Which specific spot?  Where the Rack and Churrasco's were?  Churrasco's left on their own volition (I believe), I believe and the Rack was poor execution by well-meaning people who didn't know how to properly run a profitable restaurant.  Tasty food, however.

I assumed Soul meant the spot that they had leased in Maplewood village

Ah, gotcha.  Seems absent a liquor license or in a self-owned building, a lot of spots in the village are snake bit...

That's correct. Maplewood Village spot. Started as Maplewood Grill. That last about an hour... Something in between that and Colombian place...

IIRC the in-between was a sort of quasi-Maplewood Deli/Sutagao combo owned by the owners of Sutagao who bought it from the Deli guys.

Actually, I think they were the third owners. There was the deli - that lasted 3 years, then there was another owner - who I met with since I was still curating the art at the time. He was an artist as well but his name escapes me. They lasted less than 2 years - and then Sutago.

3 is the magic number .  #1 tried to offer me a job as the early morning open up person who would

have fresh coffee and pastry available for the earliest of commuters.   The job was simple enough

and a few extra Euros always comes in handy but it would have entailed a 5:30 AM arrival

I did not know there was a 5:30 AM.

Also either #1 or # 2 told me his Dad was a former Mayor of South Orange

All three made tasty sloppy Joes.............second only to the handiwork of Steve Crane.

Oh and I guess I should mention........according to my source for all information Village connected,

The owner of the building has already fielded many inquiries about the site.   After all it is set up as a restaurant and nothing more than a coat of paint would be needed to make another go of it.

The human spirit is indomitable and there are many out there willing to take a risk .

I predict number 4 will open before the end of the year.

What sort of restaurant would we like to see?

I vote for Middle Eastern Falafel type.

That is one of my go-to places. I'd like it to be even closer.

What's up with the place facing the parking lot at Baker and Maplewood Ave., behind Lorena's? There have been signs in the window for [can't remember] bowls for a while.

PS Porto Falafel has great lunch specials.

Is Sutagao really moving to a new location or out of business?

The very best Joes IMO were from Scott's near the Maplewood Pool which went out of business due to the failings of the landlord (from what I understand.)  I really miss that place and those Joes!!

They posted on Facebook a few months ago that they are looking for a new location

Sadly, my guess is that it will never reopen.

While its not Sutagao , the new SO restaurant Miti Miti  has Empanadas, Arroz con Pollo and Ropa Vieja. Food is delicious!

Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about an old (now gone) favorite of ours, Churrasco? When they left Springfield Ave., the owners were hoping to reopen somewhere in the area, but I haven't heard anything and I've lost their phone number. Loved that restaurant!
