Any advice re going to Cape Cod on July 4 weekend?

I found a rental that I like the looks of for our needs as a family. However, the only week available is the last weekend in July or July 4. I cannot imagine what the traffic would be like. I thought maybe we could go early and stay outside the Cape for a couple of nights...hoping the traffic going up might be less insane. We have always gone in August...there is a part of me that wants to stick with what I know. (Like don't go to CC during a holiday).

I have a Wellfleet house available to rent in August, if interested.

Can you get up and drive after midnight or 4 am?

Kidkit, how many people does it fit, and is it available for Oysterfest?

The house really isnt so special. It is just the first thing my grown daughter on autism spectrum has shown much interest in in a long time. It seems to be both private and within walking distance of village. She likes to get around on her own.

July 4th is really the start of the season on the cape. And Saturday is the worst day to venture on the cape in season. Since the 4th is a Saturday, I suspect it will be even worse. If possible, I'd go on Thursday and try to find something for 2 nights in a hotel if you can swing that. If not, stay off-cape on Friday night somewhere and leave really early on Saturday to get on cape.

If you are there on July 4, spend the day in Provincetown and reserve a spot on the last whale watch of the day. Seeing the P'town fireworks from the water is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If it's hot during the day and you want to swim, you can go to Race Point beaches, Herring Cove for gentle waves, or Provincetown beaches for a waveless dip. Also visit Pilgrim Monument. Get there early for parking. Parking is a big problem all over eastern MA (I just spent three years living there) especially on the Cape in mid-summer. You have to plan your time, go to a specific beach or town early, and stay off route 6 if you can. It's very rough. Expect P'town to be as crowded as Manhattan.

3 bedrooms, tho there is an extra basement (above ground) room w a sofabed. All mod cons, wifi, large flat tvs, etc. A mile past downtown Wellfleet. Woodsy and totally private. Two master bedrooms, one is an addition that has A/C. Rest of house is not a/c'd. Rarely a problem, exc in a bad heat wave.

We were late to rent this year, thinking we would be here all summer (currently in Wellfleet, and newly retired!), but decided to travel instead. So usually rents for 2800 (on "weneedavacation.com" listing # 22421 --see this for photos) but now at 2500.

Jayjay those were my plans exactly. Not so familiar with outside of Cape. Are you? Can you recommend any place?

Try staying somewhere in Seekonk, Ma. if you want to avoid paying Cape high season motel prices. It's about 50 miles to the Sagamore Bridge, and then the time from there depends what town you're going to. If you get to the bridge by 9 on a Saturday morning, you'll be fine in avoiding traffic going on-Cape. (Have done it lots of times.) It's about another 45 minutes to Wellfleet, e.g., but once you're over the bridge...well... you're on the Cape (so who cares!).

No prob. Seekonk should really work. But you really need to be at either of the bridges by 9 to avoid the bridge traffic. Have a blast on the Cape!

You can take a seal watch boat from Monomoy in Chatham. We found the beaches in Chatham, and the town, to be beauty spots, after many years of living, working and visiting on the Cape.
