Any advice for fixing my crashing mac?

I generally don't update software because I am afraid it won't work as well as whatever current version I have. But I made an exception a couple of days ago and updated to Safari 9.0.?? Apparently I also updated Quick Time at the same time, but I didn't realize it.

Anyway, my computer has begun to crash many times a day since updating Safari. It has taken me hours to try to fix it, but I can't follow directions because they seem to not apply to my mac. I go to preferences, and security, but there isn't a way to block pop-up ads (in case that's the problem).

In searching for a way to fix this, I came across information about the versions of Safari on my mac. The version that I had before 9 was 7. I never had version 8. Could this be the problem? If you miss updating a particular version, is it a cause for glitches?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You might try switching to Google Chrome. It's a lot faster on my Mac than Safari.

I was thinking of doing that. Might be easier than trying to identify adware and/or uninstalling safari and reinstalling an earlier version. Thanks for the suggestion, kthnry.

Use chrome, then go to the app store and get a virus scanner, I use Bitdefender. Not a guarantee of cleaning everything, but if there's anything major, it should pick it up and quarantine it.

If you figure it out, please share.  The same thing is happening to me.  I've tried Disk Repair, and running Malwarebytes, but the Mac still crashes.

Sometimes things get to the point where you need to just start over. Do a backup with Time Machine, install OSX, restore your files from the Time Machine backup.

It's not a painless process (especially if you have Microsoft Office installed and don't have your product key) but it's better in the end than putting up with a screwed up system.

Yosemite and Safari have not been working well together for a while, it seems:  http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/18/troubleshoot-safari-freezes-crashes-mac-os-x/

I have had no problems with Safari and El Capitan...

You've backed yourself into a corner. You might have caused this problem by deferring updates. Now your particular combination of apps might not be able to work. Try updating everything. From now on, accept all updates from companies whose software you know lives on your computer. These updates rarely make things worse and usually make them better.

It would be nice if these things automatically installed without asking you or telling you. That is a new trend, but it hasn't caught on completely.

I highly recommend Brier IT (local resident) who I've been using over the last several years when I have "issues" with my beloved computer.  Bite the bullet, spend the money and let him give you peace of mind.  He visited my computer today!  Definitely worth having someone to bounce things off of when problems crop up.

Thank you for all your suggestions!

Go into Safari's Preferences > Search and unclick the checkbox for Include Safari Suggestions.

dave, you are a miracle worker -- when I went into safari preferences, I clicked on security and saw the block popup windows option that I'd been looking for yesterday. However, the 'Include Safari Suggestions,' wasn't clicked so I was unable to unclick it. I noticed that the 'bing' search engine had been chosen, and I changed it to 'google.'

Perhaps a little progress.

OK, good. Now update your software.
