4th of July Softball!

Once again, for the xth year (I can't recall how many), there will be a softball "tournament," starting at noon in Memorial Park, as part of the 4th of July festivities. Tournament is a misnomer. It's really just three consecutive one-hour pick-up games (noon, 1pm, and 2pm) with a rag tag collection of walk on players, both men and women, most of whom just remember to come down to play once a year on the 4th.

The event is open to all (grown ups). Your kids have plenty of opportunities to play sports. Old men and women have very few. Plunk them in the stands if they would like to attend. Then they can witness you pulling a hamstring while racing to first base after hitting a pop up to the catcher.

Rule number one: This is noncompetitive. I am the ump and occasional batter, depending upon how I'm feeling. Anyone found to have a competitive drive will be summarily tossed out of the game. Years ago some dope felt that he needed to slide into second base, taking out the lovely young woman who decided to play just minutes before the game started. All of us just beat the crap out of him. (kidding)

Rule number two: "Nobody walks but the mailman." I will call balls and strikes...but mostly strikes. I will force the pitcher to throw meatballs so that everyone can screw themselves into the ground trying to be a hero and hit a HR.

Rule number three: We will keep score for absolutely no reason. Everyone is out there for their own glory. You will be playing with strangers with whom you have no relationship, attachment, or thought of seeing again come July 5th. So should someone feel a need to try to count the runs each inning, at the end of each hour we will announce the score so that one group of strangers can feel superior to the other.

Rule number four: The official sign up clipboard will be available at 11:45am at the field on the corner of Valley and Oakview. You may sign up for one game at a time. If, after the first game, you would like to play again, you may sign up for another game, assuming all of the roster slots have not been taken. All of the roster slots have never been taken. If you want to play a second game, you'll be able to.

In sum, this is a really fun (and funny) annual event. Find your glove in the garage and stretch out your arms and legs. See if you can find a bat that you like and bring that, along with a softball if you have one. Most importantly, bring an ice pack.

Who's in??

I am happy to announce that I will be coming out of retirement for this game ... Well, if I can find my cleats and glove, I'll come out of retirement ... I'm also tickled pink to announce that my daughter will be lacing them up for the first time ever ...

Let's play two.

Wait ... Let's play THREE!

Bump. Not a huge softball contingent on MOL these days, I guess.

I will try to be there. Should be OK, unless there are plans I am unaware of. It wouldn't be the first time.

I'm trying to decide if I should play. Haven't picked up a bat or ball since last July 4 two years ago.

I forgot the other rule: Talent is not required, expected, or valued.

I'm more concerned about injury potential

well that's clear if you are letting Soul29 on the diamond. oh oh

Let me state, categorically, there is tremendous potential for injury. And one should always strive to reach their potential. You should come out, ml1.

My husband is probably going to play. I'm prepared with positive phrases "nice try" "good hustle" etc. Should I also bring a medical kit? ; - )

Only ice, ibuprogen, and tourniquets. Anything else the squad will bring.

I was just in the park. Looks like the Township gave short shrift to softball. I didn't see a single field that has enough room for a game with a full outfield.

Jeff are we on Memorial 3 corner of Baker and Valley

Thanks.

Thanks to jeffl for making this happen for 20+ years ... So much fun ... Can't say how much it meant to play alongside Casey Softball and turning the double play was a lot of fun ... Nice to see Le Grande Choo Choo (Train of Thought) out on the diamond ... Looking forward to next year!

Soul...While I appreciate the props, the sadly accurate size description, and even an accidental Walter Johnson or Rusty Staub image, I readily acknowledge that I am not even remotely worthy of the Big Train name.

And Jeffl Jr. hit a HR!

Yes , thank you. First, but certainly not last, time participating.
