2 very different, satisfying events from last 24 hours

The first ever real picture of a black hole:

The NY Rangers beat the lottery odds and nabbed the 2nd pick in this year's draft, positioning them to grab one of the 2 young stars that people in the know are gushing about.  The Rangers have not picked higher than 4th since 1969 and have not picked second since 1966 (Brad Park). The Devils also beat the odds and got the first pick so they'll get the other young star.

That black hole photo is simply amazing, and how she figured out the math to make it work just astounds me.

I couldn't believe that no-one mentioned it, at all, all day at work. Not a peep, in over 12 hours and three different sites. *shakes head ruefully*

It seems that in many ways we really have lost the magical sense of Wonder, and prefer the artifice of Special Effects and animation over real life.

It's a big thing in my family, especially for me and my son becaue we have loved this stuff since he was little, but there is general apathy about it "out there."  I am surprised it was not posted here before I got to it.  Someone here usually posts these kinds of cosmology/astronomy/space stuff stories.

I’ve been rereading this article on the ‘teeny’ details that had to come together for that  collaboration to work properly; thought you might enjoy it too:

55 million years for the light to get here. The size of the universe is heart breaking an mind boggling.

I also loved the old pic of the stack of program print-out for that Apollo trip!! cheese
