"Say it ain't so!"

The St. Louis Cardinals perfect the 21st century version of stealing signs....and get busted for it.

Best. Byline. Ever.

I thought the title of this thread would be "Astrogate".

Um, DaveSchmidt, any relation to the Times writer?

Not familially. ;-)

Noting a notable absence from participation in this thread.

The Gas House Gang are turning over in their graves! Stealing signs is a time honored tradition...not unlike Leo Durocher lifting his spikes when sliding into second or Dizzy Dean planting a fastball in the batter's ear.

Hacking a private computer system is in a different league than sitting in the outfield stealing signs.

Lewis Robert Wilson approves.

Wasn't it Durocher who said, "Nice guys finish last"?

Jeff Luhnow, the Astros GM seems to be a Durocher acolyte.

According to the NYT article, revenge and suspicion are what prompted members of the Cards front office to go through a list of passwords that Jeff Luhnow used to get access to a database used to store all baseball operations info.

Nice one!

Since 2000 the Cardinals have come in 1st 8 times and 2nd another 4 times. Very successful.

Since 2000 the Astros have come in 1st once, 2nd 5 times and been in the cellar for the better part of the last decade.

Why would the Cardinals choose to hack them?

Would that be the NSA league? I don't much about the players in that league. All I remember is that Snowden was traded to Moscow for a spy to be named later....

What a great esoteric play! A grand slam!

Technology and baseball. I dunno...

I have this image. It's September 1920. The Tigers are chasing the first place Yankees, out by 1 game. The Yankees come into Detroit with their newly acquired star George Herman Ruth for a double-header that may determine the Pennant. Looking for inspiration and an edge, the Tigers surround their hard-nosed leader, Ty Cobb, for advice on how they can dispatch Ruth and beat those hated Yankees. "Ty, we've gotta take both ends today....what can we do?", they furtively beg. Cobb pulls himself up from the bench to his full measure and with a cool piercing stare, Cobb offers the words his teammates are seeking - "Get me my laptop boys, I'm gonna google him".

there not enough (or any) emoji's to show my approval for this annecdote.

That settles it. I'm gonna be a Yankees fan from now on.
