"Amy" - Oscar-winning documentary about Amy Winehouse

I just finished the "Amy" documentary last week and was blown away. I wasn't really into what little I'd heard of her music at the time and didn't know much about her besides her struggles with drugs and alcohol. I came away from this movie feeling heartbroken, but also with a new and deep appreciation for the artist and her work.

The movie is made from an incredible archive of personal footage and new voiceover interviews (no one appears on camera). It painted a moving portrait of a frighteningly talented young woman, the unknown terror of rocketing into fame, and the people she'd surrounded herself with. She had some truly wonderful people in her life that genuinely cared about her, but the people she loved and needed most (her husband and her father) seemed to just say whatever they needed to say to keep their personal gravy trains going. I was moved to tears a few times at how desperately sad, lonely, and helpless she seemed. There's amazing footage of her recording with her idol Tony Bennett and tragic footage of her falling apart at a concert that she was forced to do.

Needless to say the dad and ex-husband are pretty upset and want to make their own movie "to set the record straight." You can see their behavior and judge for yourself.

I was indifferent about her before I watched the movie and was hooked the whole way through. That's a success in my book and I'm glad to see it won the Oscar. Recommended, even if you're not a fan.

I think everyone knew her husband was no good. He had admitted he was the one who did the drugs with her, getting her hooked initially. But her father has always tried to portray himself as her knight in shining armor, her saviour so I would bet he's plenty upset. I would really like to see this. Have to add it to my watch list.
