When photojournalist Eugene Kappock passed away in 2015, he left behind a legacy of black and white images taken over the course of his 40-year career. As a photographer for the New York Daily News, the New Jersey native witnessed and documented sports, celebrity, and political drama of a not-so-long ago New York City. His work inspired two Maplewood friends to create The Geno Project, looking at a slice of Kappock’s impactful career during the 1970s and 1980s. Linda Karten, together with the photographer’s daughter, Barbara Dlugosz, present images that capture the style, talent, energy and emotion that pulsed through New York City during the late 20th century. “Looking at Gene’s work today,” Karten explains, “takes us back to a time when we grabbed our news without cellphones, CNN, or the web. The front page of the Daily News was where the big stories hit. Pictures taken by Gene and his comrades -- with film-loaded cameras – transported us to Shea, the Met, or City Hall, and gave us a juicy bite of the Big Apple.”
