Leonard Bernstein at 100 is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, the composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador, and humanitarian, officially beginning on August 25, 2017, Bernstein’s 99th birthday, and continuing through his 100th year until August 25, 2019. As a theatre composer, Bernstein and his collaborators brought us such outstanding shows as On The Town, Wonderful Town, West Side Story and Candide. As a composer for the concert hall, Bernstein’s scores united diverse musical elements at a time when it was frowned upon to do so. His courage in mixing genres paved the way for future generations of composers to take similar risks. Dr. Robert W. Butts has shared his passion, enthusiasm and knowledge of music through his work as conductor, composer, educator, writer, and lecturer. Maestro Butts is the Conductor and Music Director and Founder of The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey. He has led the Orchestra's development from a Baroque ensemble to an orchestra that plays a wide variety of the classical and operatic musical repertoire from all periods. He has conducted major orchestra and opera performances in New Jersey as well as guest appearances in Europe, most recently making his Italian debut in Crema with a performance of Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona and the world premiere of his composition Saturnalia Strings. His Early Morning Suite for classical guitar has been featured in recitals in Italy and England as well as in the United States. He teaches in the Casperson School of Graduate Studies at Drew University and at Montclair State University. He lectures regularly for New Jersey Council for the Humanities. He has received awards from Morris Arts and The American Prize and recently received the 2016 Tourism Award from The Morris County Tourism Bureau. In May 2016, he led a performance of Alessandro Scarlatti's la Giuditta which he edited from the original 1693 manuscript found in the archives of the Washington's Headquarters Museum in Morristown, New Jersey and has created a documentary film about the manuscript and performing the Oratorio. He has presented major scholarly papers at session of The American Musicological Society, The Sonneck Society, and The Country Music Conference.
