Information:

History Through Text is a seminar to be offered throughout the year, at Temple B’nai Abraham, 300 East Northfield Road, Livingston. Led by Rabbi Clifford Kulwin, each class will also be a stand-alone unit, taught in blocks from January until May 2018, so that an inability to attend all (or even most) of the sessions will not be an impediment to an enjoyable and simulating learning experience. The History Through Text 2018 series will explore The Jewish Religion. In these sessions, we will explore Judaism has meant at different times and in different places enjoyable and simulating learning experience. Hopefully, the course we chart will not only educate us but lead us to a better personal understanding of what Judaism means to us. The first session of this series will explore Judaism of the Bible. The Bible tells us just what Judaism –a word it never uses!– was during the Biblical period. Several Jewish sects emerged from that era, each understanding differently how the Bible directed them to live as Jews: the Pharisees and Sadducees, the Essenes, Karaites and Samaritans, and others. We will read several texts from or accounts of these groups to understand what they shared and what they didn’t. The Judaism of the Bible classes will meet on Thursday, January 11 and 18, from 7:00-8:30 PM. The entire History Through Text series is free and open to the community. Register online at www.tbanj.org or call 973-994-2290.
