History of Text Varieties of Anti-Semitism@ TBA

History Through Text is a seminar to be offered throughout the year, at Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston. Led by Rabbi Clifford Kulwin, each class will also be a stand-alone unit, taught in blocks, so that an inability to attend all (or even most) of the sessions will not be an impediment to an enjoyable and simulating learning experience. The first series for 2015-2016 will be Varieties of Anti-Semitism. Historians teach us that anti-Semitism takes different forms: Hitler practiced racial anti-Semitism, Shakespeare wrote literary anti-Semitism, and Spanish Jews suffered from the religious anti-Semitism of the Inquisition. In these sessions we will read first hand documents including The Merchant of Venice, Mein Kampf and various Christian texts. As we explore the different of anti-Semitisms we will discuss their similarities and differences, as well as reach an understanding of how best to define the phenomenon. The first class meets on Monday, October 19, 7:00 PM, when “Literary Anti-Semitism; From Chaucer to Eliot” will be discussed. This series is free and open to the community.
