The Civic Engagement Institute is a free, four-week workshop offered to South Orange and Maplewood residents who are interested in acquiring skills and information that are useful for volunteering as well as in personal and professional life. Up to 30 participants will receive instruction from professionals in 1) time management and productivity skills 2) individual personality assessment and interpretation valued at $75 or more 3) group dynamics training and exercises plus receive 4) exposure to current volunteer opportunities. The last workshop session includes brief presentations by South Orange Village and Maplewood Township officials on their volunteer opportunities, along with similar presentations by a number of local service organizations. The workshop closes with a graduation ceremony. In return for this valuable training experience, participants must agree to volunteer after completing the institute for at least 6 months with the local organization of their choice. All sessions are held at the South Orange Public Library, 65 Scotland Rd. in South Orange from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday mornings.
